My 98 SLK230 Sport died today...

Back online, been away as car has been running quite well and all my time has been devoted to my Jag restoration... ( a long and ongoing saga)

so, momma was on her way to the airport and the ASR light came on and car totally died...

car is now safely home and all dash lights come on but the car will not crank
battery is 12.25 and all electrics function normally

pulled K40 relay out and all looks as it should be (repaired this some time back)
unable to pull any codes (was able to do so before) also, the fan comes on even thought the car is cold

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Dave

Before you do anything, resolder the k40 anyway. Even if it looks beautiful

Yup, you know what the K in the K 40 stands for? Answer: "kryptonite"!

Talking It's Alive!

Thank you all for bringing me back to the basics...
re-soldered the K40 and the car fired right up!

I would have finished it sooner but I work at the Navy Yard and its been of a rough week...

Thanks again all!

Hummm.... Think I'll get new one - to keep in the car for a spare. Sounds like it might be less expensive than a tow truck.

Thanks for the feedback...

Glad your car is up and running again, if mine totally died, I'd just buy another one! (then fix the present one and I'd have two!)

Thumbs up the fix was short lived...

Well, despite my rather extensive skills with a solder gun, she died again. Found a new unit on Amazon (yes, I said Amazon) for $123 and the car runs better than before! I guess that 168K was enough for the original part and that there were more demons in it than the "K40 Fix"! My thanks to all for your help. I'll review this new unit in a few thousand miles and let you know if all is still well.

Dave - what part number did you plug into Amazon?
thanks,
Carl

Edit - Part Number 2105400072 for the 98-2000 SLK230's. May apply to others as well - but not the 320's.

Wow - What a DEAL - $123.95 with Free Shipping
http://www.everythingbenz.com/z/part...s-relay-module

That price is about $50.00 less than any others - when shipping is included....

Also at Amazon with free shipping for Prime Members
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B001G5VRSM

Funny - when I went directly to Amazon.com- the price came up as $143.95. Only when I did a Google Search - and followed this link below - did they show up at $123.95 and $123.25...

http://www.everythingbenz.com/z/part...s-relay-module

Anyone thinking of getting a spare K40 - this is a DEAL for the R170 SLK230's. {different part number for the 320's}

part information

here is the link to the part I purchased. Took it to work yesterday (so I could be furloughed) and the car simply runs great!

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001G5VRSM/..._26725410_item

It is called a Strubel relay. It looks like it was successfully found in the previous post so good luck to all and thanks again!

Now back to the jaguar...
