Driving a RHD auto when only your left arm works

I have broken my right arm and will be having surgery in 12 days to have the break plated because it just won't heal on its own. I haven't driven for weeks since I had the motorbike crash which resulted in the injury, but I will be collecting my SLK tomorrow. A friend is going to drive the car to my home.

Can I drive an SLK with only my left hand working?

Starting the car will be ok - start engine before getting fully into the car. I will also switch on the headlights so that I don't have to worry about them.

Given that the car is RHD, selecting D and releasing the hand-brake (parking brake) before setting off won't be a problem.

Will I be able to work the indicators properly - can they be switched easily with fingers only, without taking my hand off the wheel?

Opinions?

Indicators should not be a problem, turning the wipers on will need you to remove your hand from the wheel. I'd put one of those knobs on the wheel rim - makes it much easier to fully control steering with one hand.

Thumbs down

Hate to be a killjoy, but over here, and speaking as a retired Police Inspector with 36 1/2 years in "the job", I wouldn't be risking it as the boys in blue will be on to you in a flash. The reason I'm taking this stance is because you will not have full control of the vehicle as you would not be able to manoeuvre the vehicle in an emergent situation.
I had a small accident with a circular saw and ended up with my left arm in a cast. The specialist who performed the micro surgery advised me that I wasn't allowed to drive until the cast had been removed and I had a clearance that the arm was fully functional.
That meant 3 months off work and my wife acting as a chauffeur.
Think of the consequences of your actions should you decide to drive and you have an accident where you or someone else is injured. , I would also check with your insurance company.
The car will still be there when you recover. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I go along with PhilD on this one its too dangerous to drive the car with only the left arm working.

I would check with your insurance company. There are plenty of people who only have one arm and drive safely. There are plenty of people who are fully mobile and are a total menace on the road - using cell phones, putting on make-up, shaving (and that's just the women !! ).

There used to be a statistic in the UK that 10% of all accidents are caused by drunken drivers. This means 90% are caused by sober drivers, so if all the sober drivers got banned, the roads would be much safer

It is amazing what you can do with just one arm.

Just wait until after surgery when you're ready to enter your rehabilitation stage. Think of how much driving you can do using that arm

I have a US version so I thought I couldn't be much help. So I thought if I sat backward in the seat it would give me similar reference for the RHD, but when I tried it, all I could do was play with my Antenna (which brings up whole other issues!)! So I can't be much help. Sorry.
