Pinking? Is there any timing adjustment on M111

Hi guys, I have just had my timing actuator replaced on my 2002 230 and everything was fine. It has a new tensioner and at 53k the original chain showed no signs of wear and was used again along withe the guides. Everything was whispery quiet. However I now have a rattle. I think it's pinking? The specialist who has done the work and has been the epitome of customer service has had the car back twice and advised that the chain and tensioner are fine. They agree there is a noise and have even arranged for me to visit a main dealer to try to diagnose my mystery rattle, which appears on load at 2000 rpm. The main dealer was at a loss to identify it either. I am convinced it is related to the timing chain. Is there any adjustment that can be made to the timing to retard slightly. My specialist advised that there is no tolerance for adjustment on the M111 and any deviation from the correct setting will throw check engine light. Is this correct?

How many miles have you driven since the timing actuator was replaced?

Hi efair, probably about 2000. The noise was not there for the first 1000 then suddenly it was.

Fuel octane rating would be one of my 1st considerations if I was encountering
audible pinking/pinging noise.

Good call, especially at the RPM that the noise becomes obvious.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies. The car has had several different tanks of fuel since it started making noises and from different garages (Gas Stations) and brands. It had a few tanks of 97 RON but made little difference.
