Auto Dimming Side View Mirror

The driver's side view mirror on my '99 SLK is on it way out. This mirror has the auto-dimming feature.

The mirror has developed some sort of haze on the inside making it difficult to use. I am thinking the dimming fluid on the inside of the mirror must be going like what happen to the inside rear view mirror.

Well my question, just to replace the mirror glass is around $328 and change. This is from MyMercededparts.com which has decent prices.

Without the auto-dimming function brings it down to $49 and change. Since I have pretty dark tinted windows, I really do not need the dimming function.

Would I be able to use the non-dimming version in my car?

I don't see why not....isn't the dimming package just an add on feature? I would imagine everything base wise was designed the same way.

I hope someone else that has swapped it out chimes in!

Hmmmm...... To restate the question I believe, the issue is will you be getting an error if one uses a non-dimming mirror? I don't know if star diagnostics can be set up to disable the requirement that a dimming mirror be installed on the circuit.

Actually using a non-dimming mirror is not the issue. The question is will the computer reported error if you use a non-dimming mirror. It could be looking to see if the mirror is functioning correctly. Now I don't know if the computer monitors "everything" in the car. If it does not monitor the functioning of the mirror, then you should be able to use a non-dimming mirror without a problem.

Ok......now I am not sure which one to get????

I wouldn't think the computer would be that advanced to monitor the mirrors. Maybe on a newer MB. My other concern is would a non-dimming mirror affect the interior center one. I am pretty sure it is the interior mirror that tells the outside one when to dim since the sensors are on the center mirror.

Why not just unplug the existing one and see if a code shows up?

I ask the dealer and even they were not 100% sure. So I just bit the bullet and ordered the auto dimming mirror. Should have it next week.

I was just gonna say, is the dimming mirror that much more expensive than the "non-dimmer"? It's a great feature to have and if your car is set up for it why not take full advantage of the option.....especially if the cost is relatively small.

The non-dimming mirror is around $40 and change.....the dimming mirror $340 and change. So big difference in price.

It shouldnt throw any codes it a standard mirrir is used, and it it does, it'll be on DAS for the service engineers use ... I've retrofitted a dimming rear view mirror, and the wiring in my (retrofitted) folding door mirrors is there for the dimming side mirrors and I've used my non dimming ones .... no codes that I can see....
