Is this normal?

I can't recall if I read somewhere in the forum that the automatic transmissions hold the upshift longer when you first start off in the mornings to warm-up the oxygen sensors.

Each and every morning when I go out for the first few shifts instead of changing gears at 2000rpm there about it seems to hold it till 3000 once it done that a couple of times it shifts nomaly from then on untill it sit over night.

So is that normal and if not any ideas what it might be?

Thanks

Hi

I am no techy but I do run 2x auto cars and have owned several auto's in the past. I would say this is normal behaviour of an auto box as the engine warms up.

Hope this helps. I'm sure someone will be along soon to provide the full technical answer!

Cheers Bill! Had not heard of the O2 sensor link...but on our 171 it runs at about 2000rpm up to the end of the street (but I'm not standing on it, as it's only about 200yds and the light is always red!) and then it shifts normally...

When you start off in the AM do you wait until the RPM's drop or do you just take off?

This occurs on my E320 and the SLK 230. It is normal from what I understand, but kind of annoying.

I have been told by the Mercedes service tech that it will do this until the temperature reaches 60 degrees C.

Quoting the manual: "After a cold start, the transmission shifts at a higher engine revolution. This allows the catalytic converter to reach its operating temperature earlier."

Mine does the same, shifting at 3000 rpm until the temperature comes up. As previously said it is to warm up the O2 sensor and the Cat.

My 320 idles up for about 10-20 seconds (depends on garage temp) , after you start off it will upshift at 1800 RPM.
