Talking Features: Garage Door Opener

So i messed with this for days, figured my door opener or remote was just too freakin old. Finally got it to go last night, now that garage door opener is out of my car. For some reason I'm just overly excited about this.

Any body else get over excited about some little thing on your car.

I would LOVE to know how you got that freaking thing to work. It was the FIRST thing I attempted when I got bella. I tried calling, I tried googling, I tried the manual, I tried everything and I still cannot get the freaking garage door opener in the car to work.

The remote opener is called Home Link. They are sold to almost every car manufacturer. You can go to the above home page for instructions for your car and the brand of door opener. The module learns from your remote and in some cases you have to then teach the opener to respond to it as a new remote.

http://www.homelink.com/home

Garage Door Opener Programming
1. Turn key in starter switch to position 1 or 2.
2. Hold the end of the hand-held transmitter of the
device you wish to train approximately 2 to 5 inches
(5 cm to 12 cm) away from the surface of the
integrated remote control located on the inside rear
view mirror, keeping the indicator lamp in view.
3. Using both hands, simultaneously push the handheld
transmitter button and the desired integrated
remote control button. Do not release the buttons
until completing step 4.
4. The indicator lamp on the integrated remote control
will flash, first slowly and then rapidly. When the
indicator lamp flashes rapidly, both buttons may be
released (the rapid flashing lamp indicates
successful programming of the new frequency
signal). To program the remaining two buttons,
follow steps 1 through 4.
Note:
If, after repeated attempts, you do not successfully
program the integrated remote control device to learn
the signal of the hand-held transmitter, the garage door
opener could be equipped with the “rolling code
feature”.
Rolling code programming:
To train a garage door opener (or other rolling code
devices) with the rolling code feature, follow these
instructions after completing the “Programming”
portion of this text. (A second person may make the
following training procedures quicker and easier.)
1. Locate training button on the garage door opener
motor head unit. Exact location and color of the
button may vary by garage door opener brand. If
there is difficulty locating the transmitting button,
reference to garage door opener operator’s manual.
2. Press “training” button on the garage door opener
motor head unit (which activated the “training
light”).
Note:
Following step 2, there are 30 seconds to initiate
step 3.
3. Firmly press and release the programmed
integrated remote control transmit button. Press
and release same button a second time to complete
the training process. (Some garage door openers
may require you to do this procedure a third time to
complete the training.)
4. Confirm the garage door operation by pressing the
programmed button on the integrated remote
control transmitter.

I followed th instructions in the operation manual. It took at least 10 seconds to sync up. You want your remote to be like 2 or 3 cm from the button. I held both until I got a rapid flashing amber light on the car Homelink thing. Then it worked. My opening unit didn't have a training button. Just hold it really close when you try to sync it.

If you have an "older" garage door opener, say circa 1990, it is very likely you will need to buy and install a "Homelink" adapter for the door opener (thing on garage ceiling). I could never get mine to link up on any of my cars until I bought one.

The garage door opener was installed in 2009. I've even tried calling the customer service number for homelink. I'll have to get a ladder and fiddle with it this weekend again.

Okay,

My jeep homelink programmed just fine, so I know that the garage door opener I have, does not have a rolling code. I followed the exact instructions listed below, and the button programmed fine.

I'm going to try these again with the merc when I get home.

Before You Begin
If you have not trained any of the HomeLink buttons,
erase all channels before you begin training.
To do this, press and hold the two outside buttons for
20 seconds until the red indicator flashes.
It is recommended that a new battery be placed in the
handheld transmitter of the device that is being copied to
HomeLink for more efficient training and accurate
transmission of the radio-frequency signal.
Your vehicle should be parked outside of the garage
when programming.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position.
2. Hold the battery side of the handheld transmitter
away from the HomeLink button you wish to program.
3
UNDERSTANDING THE FEATURES OF YOUR VEHICLE 161
Place the handheld transmitter 13 in (3-8 cm) away from
the HomeLink button you wish to program while
keeping the indicator light in view.
3. Simultaneously press and hold both the chosen
HomeLink button and the handheld transmitter button
until the HomeLink indicator changes from a slow to a
rapidly blinking light, then release both the HomeLink
and handheld transmitter buttons.
Watch for the HomeLink indicator to change flash rates.
When it changes, it is programmed. It may take up to
30 seconds or longer in rare cases. The garage door may
open and close while you train.
NOTE:
Some gate operators and garage door openers may
require you to replace Step 3 with procedures noted in
the Gate Operator/Canadian Programming section.
After training a HomeLink channel, if the garage
door does not operate with HomeLink and the garage
door opener was manufactured after 1995, the
garage door opener may have a rolling code. If so,
proceed to Step 5 Programming A Rolling Code
System.
4. Press and hold the just-trained HomeLink button
and observe the indicator light.
If the indicator light stays on constantly, programming is
complete and the garage door (or device) should activate
when the HomeLink button is pressed.
If the indicator light blinks rapidly for two seconds, and
then turns to a constant light, continue with programming
for a Rolling Code.

Well, that didnt work. My home link doesn't have red lights or green lights, only yellow lights. They flash fast, they flash slow, they shut off. I cleared the buttons per instruction and then proceeded to link, no go.

Hold your garage door opener closer. When it finally worked for me, I was holding it really close. First couple times I think I was to far from the unit. In the end the remote LED and the Yellow Homelink LED stayed solid for like 10 seconds, at the end the homelink began flashing rapidly, took my quite a few tries though.
