I presume it's very similar to the R171 mechanism?

I haven't actually fixed it yet, but the information is great. I work for a small used car dealer and the roof on an '01 slk320 we got it isn't working. I just got caught up enough yesterday to return to the diag on the slk. When operating the button to lower the roof, the front windows drop slightly and I can hear the pump energize, but that's it, then the button starts flashing. In the close position, I can again hear the pump energize, with an obvious system load, then then it proceeds to roll the front windows up as intended.

Check put the R170 troubleshooting PDF. Lists reasons why front or rear windows won't be lowered. 4 or 5 micro switches to check.

Good luck.

you said the front windows drop slightly. Do they work otherwise? IF so try lowering them before you try to open the top. The rear windows only lower when the top is opened and close with the top.

you might also look under the 170 section of the forum.
goto forum then down to R170 SLK Class car then down to SLK 1998 to 2003 R170 encyclopedia. There is more information on the 170 top operation.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to the board discussions, the holidays and vastly increased inventory kinda put a damper on things. Anyway, the main problem wound up being blown seals in the hydraulics. I've gotten them repaired and the roof is pseudo operational now. The rear windows however are completely inop as of yet. I am wondering if they may be the cause of the current issue (and reason I consider the roof pseudo operational). Closing, everything seems to be working fine, but opening the roof, you have to hold the switch in 2-3 second intervals until the trunk lid is fully raised. Up til that point the pump only runs momentarily then stops and the switch starts flashing. Once it gets past the trunk lid opening completely it will continue to run correctly and everything seats properly. The reason I believe it is related to the rear windows is that I noticed the flaps to catch the rear windows slightly, so I am assuming that the rear windows should be in the full down position before everything else will work properly. I read that the rear windows should also work from the window switches, which they do not, so I am going to start digging into the diag on them now, but if anyone has any ideas to point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! Trying to figure out why mine keeps getting stuck. It will work perfectly 3-4 times and then the next time it just gets stuck and has to raised manually. This should help me figure it out.

Great info - thanks for sharing!

My roof usually stalled when I tried to open it, so I was looking for some tips here on how to fix it. I think I may have resolved that issue, but I think I also may have created a new issue in the process. While the top was halfway open, I decided to open trunk latch (not really sure why, that was kind of dumb). I closed it again, but after that, the roof switch wouldn't operate. So, I decided to close the trunk and the roof manually, and that seemed to go fine. But, now when I try to open the roof, the switch flashes rapidly. According to the diagnostic/troubleshooting sheet posted earlier this thread, I think this may be signalling defect #2. But, both the trunk partition and trunk lid are closed. Any ideas on what else may be the problem?

Hello everyone,

this spring i have bought SLK 200 1999 and i am experiencing some roof problems. Roof switch is always flashing while i'm driving and there's a beep sound also, it doesn't matter if roof is opened or closed, the light always flashes and the beep sound time by time turns on. Also there is this thing that roof closes till the end, while i am holding button, but when i let it go it detaches and this is why on rainy days i have roof leak on both sides of the car.
Electric engineers couldn't find the problem, as all lids are working properly, except the ones who are in the trunk where the roof reacts if blind is in or out, which lets the roof to be opened, though there might be no blind.

If you have any comments or advices, i will be very thankful to hear them from you.

rut,

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your location and vehicle (model and year,ie 2007 SLK 350) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

We want to welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a datacard (options on your car) free.

The diagnosis sheets helped me figure out that my trunk switch S69/12 was the problem with my car - after testing though I found that the switch was good, but the locking / unlocking mechanism was sticking - had to take apart the key side and remove the plastic cylinder that is operated by a spring around it (a plastic bar couples it to the trunk latch) - after sanding / filing a bit off and several trials fits, I finally got it operating freely and it now allows contact of the switch in the latch.
Was having issues making the trunk close before - obviously these were related.
Thought it was worth sharing this as it took a couple hours to diagnose and correct.

Wow. That's the exact problem I'm having. Do you have any pictures of the problem switch?

I didn't take any pictures - always an afterthought for me

I'll try to get a couple this weekend while I work on the car - was fairly easy to remove and repair once I figured out the problem.
