Engine hesitation from standstill

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, but recently bought a 2000 SLK230 and have a few issues. Perhaps you've heard it all before, but I'm hoping someone can give me some clues as to what might be the problem.

More often than not the engine hesitates when accelerating from stand still. Once it reaches 5 or 10MPH it goes smooth and fine without any trouble, but pulling away makes it 'stutter'.
The car has been on the latest diagnostics and had a full service last month. All filters etc have been changed.

I must say, the hesitation only happens when pulling away normally.
When I accelerate really slowly or really fast, there is no hesitation.

Does anyone have a clue to what might cause this?

Thanks in advance!
R

The first thing I would do is add a bottle of Techron when the tank was about empty. If you have just recently had full service, the culpret may be as simple as bad gas or non premium in that tank [you have no way of knowing what they used].

I have searched the net and found SLK230 manuals that said regular unleaded, but others that state clearly it needs Premium Unleaded?!

These are high performance luxery vehicles, I have never read ANY forum thread here that said "use regular unleaded". There are many conversations here in depth about the fuel and fuel additives to use and before I ramble on and on, I'm not the car expert but I can promise you that all slk's should be getting premium. It even says it on the inside of my gas cap housing "premium only".

side note: please update the year of your vehicle in your profile description and follow the data card link in my signature to post your VIN to get a datacard which lists the specs on your car.

Its the engine knocking, stalling, sputtering gremlins that have by coincidence ceased in the past by people using a bottle of fuel additives to clean out the previous gunk. and no one could tell you why a simple $8 solution would make the problem go away, but it's best to start simple.

I have a corporate lawyer in my office, at the age of 29 he was a master mechanic for Mercedes. And the question is constantly posed to him "is premium really better than regular unleaded". And he will talk for an hour on the benefits, no matter which vehicle it's in. I hope others chime up, and I hope this fixes the issue. We have amazing people here that do nothing but help others. So you're in the right place

I always use premium fuel even though the owners manual says 91 octane is ok. Techron will probably help the hesitation issue.

It's probably not the fuel.

It seems to be a 'feature.' It is the one thing I absolutely hate about this car.

From the 2000 SLK 230 manual, page 149:
"With the transmission in gear range "D", "4", or "3", upshifting from from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear is delayed depending on vehicle speed and engine temperature. This allows the catalytic converter to heat up more quickly to operating temperatures. During this brief warm-up period this delayed upshift and increased engine noise might be perceived as a malfunction. However, neither the engine nor transmission are negatively affected by this mode of operation."

I just got in the habit of letting the car run for about 45 seconds before I drive off. That seems to be long enough to get past this crazy and annoying issue.

Hi randy,

Thank you for your reply and advice.
I haven't got a manual here. Didn't come wit the car. What can you expect for Ł2000 haha. Anyway...I will discussit with my local Mercedes specialist.

When I accalerate its almost like the engine is dying for a second or 2, holding back and stuttering. Not sure if this is what you experience, but thats what it feels like. When i let go of the throttle and let it run, it goes smoothly. So its only when i press down the throttle. If i keep it down, it goes eventually fine.

Its been on 3 diagnostics and check-ups specifically for this issue in the last 5 months and all results were good.
Clearly something is not right, but I haven't found it yet.

Thank you again and have a nice weekend!

Rob

Sounds to me like the mixtures getting lean when you press the accelerator. Maybe the MAF?

Rob,

From what you describe, it's probably the same thing as I suggested that is documented in the manual. If the car runs fine once it's warmed up and out of 2nd gear, then it's just the catalytic converter issue that you can't do anything about.

Yes, use Techron and only Premium fuel, that is good to do, but it won't fix the hesitation issue at cold start. I accidentally used less than Premium once and when the fuel got below quarter tank, it really started running badly, so only Premium.

For the manual, my used SLK didn't come with one either. But if you search for a PDF version here you should be able to find a link to download it.

Just do this for the next few days...let the car run for 45 seconds before putting it into drive. At some point you will hear the engine noise go down a little. At that point, put the car in drive and see if you don't drive out normally with no hesitation.
