Changing stereo, some questions

Hi All!

I have an SLK with an Audio 10. I want a stereo upgrade, mainly for use with modern phones and mp3 files on USB drives. I've actually already purchased the after market stereo I wanna use, an Alpine CDE-173BT.

I've tried searching here and otherwise, and found some good info but still have questions. I do know my way around electronics (even got a degree and some practical experience) but it's been 15 years since I last mounted a car stereo.

Background

My SLK is a -97, of German origin. The datacard has these items related to the stereo system:

270 INVALID/ANTENNA F.D-NET TELEPHONE ON FENDER REAR.L
312 TELEPHONE D-NET "MOBILE" AT TOWER (NOKIA 3110)
756 RADIO MB AUDIO 10 CD WITH VK/RDS
810 SOUND SYSTEM

I do actually not know if I have a "Bose" sound system - how do I find out?

Stereo installation, where to find parts for "my" harness?

After checking out https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-cla...-pictures.html I have much info. However, the total combination of cables and connectors can be quite daunting. This is increased by the fact that the Alpine does not have ISO connectors in its chassie, instead they have their own connector and a harness that converts this to ISO connectors.

I really do not want to cut any of the original cables of the car, and I would like to avoid double adaptor harnesses, so my first question is if anyone know where to find a supplier of these items that ships to Sweden:
  • A connector that will fit into the SLK original audio harness. I believe that tis is the "VW01B Wiring harness" mentioned in BSKs thread above?
  • A connector that fits into the Alpine head unit?
If I cannot find the latter, I guess I'll survive with using Alpine -> ISO and ISO -> Benz.

Phone stuff

My car aparantly has a phone unit for a Nokia 3110 which inclueds a neat mic near the rear view mirror and a phone holder lying on the passenger side footrest. I cannot see any devices for the phone stuff when removing the current head unit.

Does anyone know where the electronics for the OEM phone connector is hidden?

It should be possible to re-use the existing phone mic with my Alpine unit, as long as I can find the cable...

Getting there?

What's your favourite guide for dismounting the centre console, so I can access what I need to access? I've seen some while searching, but non that seems to obvious for me.

I went with a Blaupunkt for the above reasons, it was truly a "plug and play" including the Bose amp. I have a line level converter, but it will work fine without it.

You don't need to cut anything! All you need is this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0007W...sr=8-2&pi=SL75
And connect whatever aftermarket harness you have to this harness :-)
I didn't mess with the phone but I think it's the second connector with 3 wires going into it to the back of the OEM stereo.
Check behind your seats? Do you see two round/oval mesh grills for the speakers saying Bose? If so then you have Bose system.
And remeber it's two channel system only! Meaning amplifier splits low and high frequencies automatically even though you have 4 speakers ( 2 in front doors and 2 behind seats), two tweezers in doors. It's just left and right treated as two channel only. If you have Bose :-) btw, R170 also has 2 separate speakers for the phone talk :-) but nobody knows that ;-) they're located in the footwells in the side panels

Well, as I wrote above - I didn't need any external adapter at all - the ISO harness supplied with the Alpine was plug'n'play with the car cabling.

(that's a small lie - I needed the antenna adapter recommended by BSK, but only if I wanna listen to radio).

My car seems built like the one I in the thread by BSK, using a six speaker setup. One set behind the seats, and the other two sets in the doors.

Now only the phone remains.... i.e. either reusing the existing mic, or trying to mount the one supplied with the Alpine.

No fool involved. Almost everyone misses something on first attempt at a repair or upgrade. I certainly have (many times). Good luck with your installation.

OK, now I'm almost done.

0. My car has the BOSE 6-speaker system. Just FIY

1. Stereo installation. Single DIN. ISO connectors. Plug and play with the car. Gotta love standards. (antenna connector adaptor needed - easy to find in any car part store). I understand from the schematics that this actually taps the front speaker outputs to the SLK built in amp - but it works perfectly. The Alpine harness actually came with three power cables that could be changed (yellow-red-orange) but I just plugged red to red, orange to orange and yellow to yellow and it works as it should.

2. Phone. I left the old phone gear for now. The new mic was clipped onto the sun visor and I led the cable as good as possible behind the trimming down to the center console. It took some jiggling to get the cables all the way to the stereo, but I finally got there. Easy Bluetooth setup with my phone (HTC Android phone) and really good sound when standing still and with the roof up. Roof down and driving I still aparantly pick up a lot of wind noise - might have to experiment with different mic placements.

2. Open Beer. Enjoy. Or skip beer if you wanna drive around and enjoy the stereo.

Possible todos for me are:

- Better mic placement
- Decide what to do with the old Audio 10 - sell or keep?
Tolak likes this.
