Abs, BAS, ESP Issue

Ok i have done extensive research and I am still puzzled.

The car is my dads car and from what he told me the lights came on the cluster suddenly.

Car is a Slk 230 with 30,000 miles. 2001. Red.

Now I am checking out the car and some weird things happen. I drove it around with the roof down for about 20 minutes and when I got home the roof would not go up. The roof button would flash red if you moved it. I turned the car off and put it to position 2 and was able to put the roof up.

I did have a problem a while ago about the bas esp light and replaced one of the two sensors. It was around $500 from fcpeuro. That did solve that problem.

Now the weird thing. If the car is in position 2 or on and I press the brakes then release then press again it appears as though a cylinder that is attached to a vacuum hose to the brake booster starts to buzz. It is a loud buzz and something that does not sound normal. There is also a slight buzzing noise coming from the intake manifold area on the left side of the engine when it is in position 2 not on.

When the car is on the brake cylinder will buzz if the brake pedal is pressed and de pressed twice, and I can not locate the other noise as the car is on.

Any ideas?

Hmmm I have a 2003 facelift but I don't have that thing under the hood? That's on the drivers' side near headlamp, correct? Looks like aftermarket modification to me... Has your dad done anything to the car? Is he the 2nd owner?

He is the second owner and the first owner gave us the car.

I'm not sure what it does.

He has not installed anything.

It also says Daimler Chrysler on it and had a bunch of number.

Seems like you've found the brake vacuum pump; not seen that on mine, but I'll check where my brake servo gets its vacuum from.

The other noise may be the air injection pump; when the car is cold, the fuel ratio is high, so there is excess fuel in the exhaust. For the cat to burn it off, it needs additional air, so the air injection pump runs at that time.
Once up to temperature, the fuel ratio is restored to stoichiometric (15:1) and there is no need for this additional air, and so the pump stops.
On my R170, it sounds like a chugging exhaust, but it clears up when warm, and is always chugging, never rorty.

Nothing to worry about!

Well now I still have the problem of the lights on. I figured if the abs light was on that might have something to do.

It seems as though the brake light switch would not cause those 3 lights so that is ruled out.

If it helps the car can be driven fine. It is not stuck in park but after 20 minutes or so I did need to turn the car off then to position 2 to put the roof up.

To take note; your R170 is post-facelift, mine is pre-facelift.

I looked where my brake servo gets its vacuum from, and it's from the usual place for a petrol engine; the inlet manifold.
Hence when on a trailing throttle, even when there is boost active, the throttle butterfly obscures teh inlet flow, and the engine causes a vacuum. This is ideally matched to the times when you need braking, and will (de-)pressurise the reservoir during the period of tickover when the engine has just started. (Is there such a word as vacuumise? )
(For those that don't know, that big circular dome in the engine bay above the brake pedal is the brake servo; part of the reason for the size is to provide a reservoir, so you should get a couple of good brake cycles even with the engine off , after which the brake pedal goes very hard, and requires a lot more pedal pressure to achieve the same braking as with the servo active)

Jayson,
Where do you (well, your car ) get your brake servo vacuum from?
And I wish all my aftermarket fitments were like this; they even painted the threaded stud to match the bodywork, before fitting (what we now know to be) MB hardware!
So now we know what you think the MB workmanship looks like! :Ţ

My cars BAS/ESP lights have been on for a while but I never bothered doing research on it to fix it but it also didnt bother my roof going up or down. recently I got in an accident and it seemed my ABS didn't work because when my car was skidding my wheels were locked and had no control.

If the switch flashes slowly, then the safety systems are active.
Including the blind switch and teh boot latch, in your case it is probably a speed sensor that is falsly reporting, so the roof control does not know the speed of the car, and so blocks operation for safety.

So teh BAS/ABS light is the symbol of the problem that is blocking your roof.
Get the codes (which cause the BAS/ABS light) and you will be in the right place to correct the roof issue.

Let us know what the codes are.

WOW Tolak, you're very knowledgeable! I'm not that good. Just learning as I proceed . I guess then mine is the same as yours: "...that big circular dome in the engine bay above the brake pedal is the brake servo". I've never seen that brake vacuum pump. Why do they have it on his car right by the headlight. It's post-facelift and I've never seen post-facelift with this construction... Any ideas?

It sounds like there is a LOT going on here.. and not to be a stick in the mud but why don't you take it to an auto shop and get the codes read off of it for free, then at least you'll have a way to tackle the issues. Clearly some maintenance has to be done but you will have a better idea of where to start if you at least get it diagnosed first.

Naah, mate, all I've got is a nasty combination of confidence, the ability to state the obvious, and an inability to find the "tongue-in-cheek" smilie.
All cars will have the pneumatic brake servo; it's just a matter of where the vacuum comes from. In OPs case, he has a pump, which some marques need to suport the ABS.
Thinking of which, anyone checked their abs actually works? Sensors are checked, so the controller is ok, but the motor in the abs unit never runs, and so can seize. Called a dormant failure, no built in test (BIT) detects it, and it is safety critical!
