They quit because they are defective. There is a recall in the works that is supposed to start customer notification any time now that will supposedly correct the problem. There are a number of temporary fixes out there though.

Yup, had same problem ever since I bought the car. I wonder why Merc didn't fix it couple years ago, it would have saved alot on warranty repairs.

The recall will cover ALL model years of the R170 model.

If you go to www.benzworld.org and do a search in the R170 forum you will find a lot of different temporary fixes for the headlight problem.

Is this just the US model? I'm not aware that this is a problem in the UK.

All R170 models are affected worldwide. There is just a recall going on in the US now, and in the works in Canada. Elsewhere in the world I am not sure if there is a recall going on.

If you remove the light assembly, you will probably see that the brake light bulb has melted the housing, resulting in the contacts of the brake light socket to pull away from the metal track.
I tried bending the contact to seat against the track, but it failed again a short time later.
Then, I tried building up the metal track with solder so the socket contact would twist in tighter against the track, so far it still works but I want to replace both of my tail light assemblies. Before I purchase new ones, I want to compare them with the old ones to see if there is any noticable changes or design improvements.
Sometimes it's the little things that can spoil the reliabilty of a good car. Too much plastic in newer cars!

I had a similar problem on my R170, and the taillights were only the beginning... I was the motherboard of the electronic management that had failed... expensive, very expensive, not under warranty...
