Rear Brake Light Keeps "not working"

Passanger Brake light is burned out, bulb is ok, it looks as tho the blue plastic peice, that holds the bulb, is burned.

This is the second time in 4 months this has done this.

It is only a $11 peice from the dealer but it is a MAJOR hassle to change out.

The dealer took my vin number and said there is no recall on the item or any items on my car for that matter.

Soooo, guess I will have to keep changing light sockets every few months.

At least I can keep re-using the 99cent bulb!!!

I do not own a R170 but you may want to check the voltage and amp rating of the contacts that go to the blue plastic lamp holder. It may be getting more juice than it needs to and is heating up. Is the 99c bulb of the correct rating?

Also check the fuse that feeds to the rear brake lights, maybe it's faulty and allowing more than what is specified.

Yep, bulb is from the dealer...checking the voltage and all is beyond my skills.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Common fault.

There IS a recall pending in USA.

Easy to change out if you put hand thru brush slot .

Clean contacts.

Bend a little for more pressure.

Put a plastic zip tie thru base to increase contact pressure.

Dont hold foot on brake pedal, use hand brake in long stops in traffic.

White LED lamps work (lower current draw) but shine a bit pink.

Thanks Bazzle. I put 2 zip ties thru the base to apply pressure. reaching thru the brush slot did not work for me as I could not reach the top light bulb that route. I took the plastic away from the side and it is right there.

The bulb socket is soooo tough to remove that I have to use pliers to turn it.

I hope the recall happens soon...maybe the ties will solve the problem??? we'll see.

Thanks again,
SLKman

Does this mean they will not fix it if warranty expires? Will have to wait for recall?

Hard to say. I'd print the TB and show it to your MD dealer. They may do the repair. They acknowledge the problem with the TB.
