Is there even a way to check this, sans disassembling and potential destruction?

I imagine one would need to disconnect the battery, go have a brew and come back half an hour later to get into the clock spring behind the airbag.

Anyway…looking at the picture and seeing the weird shape of the ribbon cable, which shall be neat and round but is all sort of squashed, I would think that this was caused by a human error.

Either it was turned without a steering wheel installed or the steering wheel was turned with a shaft disconnected, unwinding the clockspring too much. Every time the driver turned right, the clockspring got deformed.

Hi,

Post # 5 @rfl , is bang on the money, this is an isolated incident, just another example of shoddy workmanship.

It had nothing to do with the Squib, that just went off almost certainly because the over stressed Ribbon Cable inside the Clockspring shorted out

Airbag Clockspring / Steering Angle Sensors need to be correctly centred, and caution / correct practice exercised when for example replacing a Clockspring, Steering Column or Steering Box / (Rack on other Cars)
