Unhappy Sunglass compartment on dashboard

Im assuming that the sun (from 2004) can cause the plastic on the dashboard to perish over time as I was sat in traffic and bored decide to flip open the sunglass compartment but was hit by shattered pieces of plastic and the compartment wouldn't close. On further investigation it looks like the plastic was the catch underneath the compartment. I know you can remove and replace the whole thing with cup holders but does anyone know if you can 'simply' remove the compartment so that I can get to fix the catch or does this need the whole dash to be removed?

Ok I get the drink tray but where is this so called sun glass holder? I have had two of these cars both 2001 and the slot to toss the shades is under the radio.

I use the door pocket

Seriously considered building one into the roof last time I recovered but I couldn't find a ready made console that was suitable .. maybe a kangaroo style pouch would work .. maybe next time ..

Hi @ M4rCu5 ,

My Car has "Shades" Compartment, it is where others have the Drinks Holder, I would gladly swap my "Shades Compartment" for a good un broken un glued Drinks Holder

(I've nowhere to put my Beers when driving) :>D

Cheers Dave

You should have said "I've nowhere to put my beer when tripling the speed limit on a disused airfield"

I didn't realise it was called a 'shades compartment', I keep the remote control for my radio in there

So maestro @Dave2302 .. how to get it out? 2 spatulas to press the top of it down and pull it out (after removing your beers)?

OK .. I let curiosity get the better of me ..

At the top of the tray there is a pair of lug holes, take two long-handled teaspoons or something similar, insert them betwixt the tray and the dash surround somewhere near the lug holes, locate the lugs and prise down whilst pulling the tray and the spoons (or something similar) out - takes roughly 10 seconds

EDIT
Pics now in correct order and orientation, thanks once again to Len for his help with that

I've cleaned up this thread as done

@M4rCu5 ---> Upside down pics?

What you need to do now is if they are NOT in the order you want them to display, download all of them to your computer, then delete them from the thread. Save the now pictureless post and then re-load them in the order you want. An extra step but it ensures no errors.
