Good day everyone!
Hoping to get some inputs as to how to resolve my problem. I recently purchased a 2001 SLK200 and have been using it for a week now till the other night. On the way home from the hospital, I thought of bring the top down, the cool air of 3 in the morning was relaxing. As I parked the car in the garage, I put the top back up, turned off the engine but accidentally left the key in the ignition
The following day, I found the car doors locked and the spare remote (with new batteries) also wont work. Tried the manual key option. Also nothing
@jbanks15– yes sir, i did that. I sprayed the keyhole with wd40 and left it overnight. The key-turning did become smoother but still wont unlock the door
What you need is one of these. Wedge it between the main door glass and the quarter light or the door frame and inflate slowly. Once you have a small gap insert a bent rod and grab the internal door handle and open the door.
Thank you sir! I actually called my paintless dent repair guy & that was what he did. He inserted an inflatable bag between the weather strip and the glass, inflated it and inserted a special instrument/flexible snare and grabbed the handle. A quick 3-4min procedure. He said the manual key-lock mechanism isnt working, probably a broken plastic attachment or something
It's amazing what you can find on eBay at times: - Emergency Car Entry Kit - presumably so you can get into your car or anyone else's car .. :surprise:
Good morning everyone. Would like to update those who might be interested with my power lock problem. Turns out the driver’s side power lock mechanism was ‘frankensteined’ by the previous owner. My r170’s dashboard is currently being restored. Will send finished product pictures once I get the car back.
i attached a photo of the original mechanism (left) and the replacement unit(right)
the spare key, unfortunately, was diagnosed ‘beyond repair’. Though it is still recognized by the ignition system will just serve as a spare key.
With the flip key, I took it out and soak it in WD40 and yet nothing I could not turn the key. The remote work fine, the reason I worry about it what if the car have a dead battery and or bad door switch, so how would I be able to get in. The ignition and trunk key are working fine.
You need to strip your Door Lock Barrel, carefully free off the tumblers and lubricate with a little Waterproof Grease, then make a point of exercising (using) that Door Lock and the Trunk Lock with the Key Blade at least once a month.
You're absolutely right, I don't ever use the key for the driver side and the trunk but some how the trunk still work and the driver side door I can't even shove the key in tried both keys. What I did was taken the assembly out and soak in wd40 over night and there's a lot of dirt and still nothing. Hmmm door lock barrel? Free off the tumblers and lube it, I'm trying to visualize the procedure. Do you have any picture of the 2 components that I need to concentrate on and thank you.
Could have been my wife, I wouldn’t even force it like that. Is there like a schematic or some sort of diagram that I can order which part is broken, what to to replace? I’m totally clueless in the dark here with this lock assembly.
I'm not saying that is it that by any means and this one - HERE - has no stem where as mine definitely did/has re. picture 3 - I lost mine 5½yrs ago and much to my annoyance have been looking for it ever since, doesn't help that I've moved house and 35yrs worth of tools/boxes/equipment since then as well .. I'm optimistic that it'll turn up one day
They are really really flimsy so it wouldn't surprise me at all if you'd got 10mm of broken plastic stem in the bottom of the keyhole ..
If you don't want to strip it down then just order the complete lock barrel assembly from MB, give them your VIN Number and assuming your Car has original locks it should fit your key perfectly.
You may well have to take Photo ID and Registration Document in your name as proof of ownership.
I'd like to work on it but just in case, if I some how mess up the lock I can always order a new one from the dealership right? Either that or I was thinking maybe going to a junkyard and get another key and lock for it and leave that key in the trunk just in case I can't get in if the battery is down or pse acting up. I don't mind fixing it and doing it right but dropping like 1k for a manual key on something you hardly ever use,
Just talked to the MB part department in retail and wanting to order the lock barrel assembly and the guy was telling me to bring in the car in for service so they can diagnosis the problem. Seriously fault trace a manual lock key?
Calling a different MB dealership and was quote $380 for a lock barrel assembly “ouch”. I want to give it a try by fooling around with it before placing an order on that lock barrel. I took the lock barrel assembly out before but there isn’t much for me to do. How do I completely strip it apart? It’s a 20 years old vehicle with 195k on the odometer but I swear it’s like I’m marrying to this car constantly need my attention.

It is important that the boot and indeed door lock are working properly. The use of remote central locking means keys are seldom used to open the boot. This irregular use of the key in the lock over long periods of time can result in corrosion and seizure of the lock mechanism, this can...

I used this to guide me through removal and full strip down and repair of the boot lock on my R170. Just take lots of photos as you dismantle and note the number stamped on each lever and its position in the barrel. My key would only go in halfway and I thought it was the wrong key for the lock. In fact some levers were so seized I needed a hammer and thin drift to get them out.
It is very doable if you take your time.
Good luck
Having never stripped one I can't give you a definitive answer on stripping and reassembling but it seems that you do have options..
1. Buy a breaking and entering kit and keep it in the boot but don't get pulled by the law as that will take some explaining
2. Get another barrel and key(s) from a breakers, swap the barrel and keep the key in the boot. (it's only for emergency use anyway)
3. Buy a 3ft length of 4mm interior diameter silicon vac pipe and keep that in the boot. If the CL fails, pull (I think its) the first pipe off of the PSE, use your length of pipe as an extension to the one that you've pulled off .. and blow ..
Granted, this trio of options is based on the fact that you can get into the boot with your existing keys..
Thank you for the advice on of the options, I don’t mind spending the money and doing it right but for a lock that I’m not going to use often. Spending $ on the smarttop, Michelin tires, roof ram, water pump and radiator money well spent.
You’re absolutely right! I don’t mind doing the work to the vehicle putting It back to normal whenever I have the time. Thank you so much on your input.
