My 12k mile 2001 SLK 230 has a trunk that will not open even though the lock appears to be working properly and the handle depresses normally.

Something is holding the trunk closed. I pulled up pretty hard but no joy.

What could be the problem? This is weird.

I've read that I can ground one wire under the hood to allow the roof mechanism to operate, allowing me to get to the innards of the trunk. Can anyone PM me that information?

I opened the plastic access panel inside the trunk lid. The lock mechanism appeared to be working correctly. The PSE can actuate the lock by vacuum or the key can move it by hand.

I removed the whole mechanism, which requires removing the exterior piece with the license plate lights, two screws outside and two 8 mm nuts inside. Then there are two screws under that exterior piece.

I put some PB blaster on the moving part of the lock since I couldn't see anything wrong with it.

The problem persisted. The trunk sometimes opened and sometimes did not. I decided that the latch might be misaligned. I pulled back the plastic at the rear of the trunk and used a T30 driver to loosen the striker. It was slightly off center so I re-centered and tightened it.

The trunk now appears to open and close normally.

After all that, the problem was nothing more than a misaligned striker. Sloppy work at the factory, just like my two loose bolts inside the driver's door.
