My cruise control works - sometimes

When I bought the car (2001 SLK 320) last fall the cruise was working fine. After the first really cold day, it stopped working. Now that summer is here, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When it works, it fails when there is any stress such as going up hill. My tires are correct and there are no blown fuses (or I guess it wouldn't work at all). I just spent a small fortune at the body shop and I don't really want to spend a lot on speculative mechanic work. I really need cruise to help keep my speed down to a reasonable level. I can't afford any more tickets.

Does it turn off as you take a slight turn?

It is typically a difference in tire radii from front to back causing it to be confused.

Does the limiter work? That is more of a "anti-ticket" feature anyway.

Hi,

Well I've just learned something new again today, I thought all MB's with Cruise Stalk had LIM function, just press the end of stalk in and a yellow LED in Stalk Lights Up, also LIM yellow oblong light on speedo, and the trip LCD display then shows what speed you are setting it to as you push the stalk up or down .....................

My 2002 R170 V6 has it, so does my Customers 2001 R170 V6 Car ..................

Dunno ...............

Cheers Dave

Thinking 'inside-the-box', the fact that the issue arose when it was cold seems to suggest oxidised contacts somewhere. Possibly the switch if you want to play 'parts darts' .. oddly enough I've just linked a couple of vids to axx it's neighbour HERE

Thinking 'outside-the-box' an intermittently dodgy wheel speed sensor or contact could also upset the cruise control...

Hi,

I have found over my various MB experience that the CC Stalk and functions is usually very reliable, and yes agreed it is often a spurious Wheel Speed Signal which can be either a bad ABS Wheel Sensor or the Reluctor that triggers it.

A thorough Diagnostic on a decent machine, including Live Data of Wheel Speeds will confirm or refute

I often record a graphic trace on road test for the 4 Wheel Signals on a problematic Car, then you can replay it and see spike(s) if there is a problem.

HTH, Cheers Dave

My first R170 was NA and this one is ex Japan. The NA version was just CC. The Japanese version is CC + Speed LIM.
Typical MB. There is a lot of stuff in the 12 NA cars I have owned that we did not get while others did.
