Resolved - Yet another issue. Loss of fan and all fan served areas

Hi to you all out there. I am not some one that gives up/in easily but my decision (long long story) to seek an SLK 230/320 is becoming a bit of a joke and is now trying my patience and is now attacking my shallow pockets.

I have lost all power with anything remotely dependant upon the heater blower switch which of course includes the AC,demist and other such fripperies.

I have checked the fuses and both are OK (Fuse numbers 33 & 36).

It was function early this morning and then just ceased to produce any puff at all.

Usual thing is water attacking the regulator (the thing that looks like a hedgehog) and/or the fan.

DAJ 190 had something similar just a couple of months back .. HERE

The three prong connection that attaches to the regulator(resistor) should always have power from the red lead, the brown lead is ground, and the white/pink strip lead is controlled by the fan switch. With the car off, and the fan switch in the "off" position, there should be no power to the white/pink lead. With the car on, the voltage to the white/pink lead should increase as the fan switch is rotated from "off" to "high".

If there is constant power to the white/pink lead, the control panel is defective. If there is no power to the white/red lead, but the fan still runs, the regulator(resistor) is defective.

Hi again to you all. Well what an experience and trip of discovery that I experienced this morning at my MB Specialist/In dependant.

After being told late yesterday which fuses could possibly be the cause of my fan not working and finding out that whey were all still intact I decided to take a trip over and see him.

The investigation started with the controls and the directional settings that produced the pathetic results that I had experienced before the system just died and ended with pulling the Pollen Filter housing out of the underside of the glove box.

The car albeit an early 2004 model with just 60,000 miles on it looked as though the filter had never been changed ,never mind having been looked. It was choked and looked more like a filter out of a domestic vacuum cleaner.

A new filter was installed and the settings adjusted and the fan immediately responded by directing driven air to each and every part of the car.

This is a car that had a stamped history but nowhere did it list a Pollen Filter,am I reading the service history correctly or are they inspected and unless clogged just get put back in position.

The car had two individual service books;the MB one and one from The Good Garage Scheme.com !!!
the latter being very very light on detail over a rather short period before reverting totally to the MB system.

That's pretty shocking considering how cheap they are, true you have to be some sort of contortionist to fit one but it should still be a part of a full service schedule IMHO. Glad you got it sorted

Hi again Marcus. I am in somewhat of a slightly favoured position here;I have a nephew that is a MB Independent/Specialist and has been now for some 12 years.
He made the decision to go it alone after many years of being a fully trained diesel fitter before moving over to passenger cars with one of the largest MB dealership groups here in the UK.
His business is approximately 11 miles away and whilst he will and has carried out a transmission service and an 'A' service very recently.

At 73yrs young I am very happy not to be contorting myself in such a ridiculously cramped space even with the seat fully retracted.

I experienced a taster of getting into tight spaces when I fitted a built-up accelerator attachment onto the one in the car.
I am of rather short stature (4'10") and driving the car proved to be must uncomfortable with my right foot extended in such a way that it was painful.
The adaption was carried out with 'Boy Racer' type aluminium pedal covers and a small platform that sits on the face of the existing pedal and fitted as a standalone unit and secure with large reusable cable ties.

Attached are a couple of images of the pedal that now allow a really feather-light touch with absolutely no stain on my right ankle/foot.
