SLK R170/R171 hoop mounted windbreaker query.

Hi again to you all out there.

Simply put will the windbreaker mesh from an R171 go directly onto an R170 ?

My car is by all accounts a late 2003 car but registered in January 2004.

Having seen images of both they really do appear to be identical with the female component on the screen in exactly the same place, the short nipple/post that is fixed at the lower outer edge of the roll-over hoops also appear to be the same.

I have attached an image of one of mine.

probably not

the r170 has pre facelift and facelift versions

the mesh for the r170 fl and non fl was different

the r171 has pre facelift and facelift verions and the mesh from those are different

so the odds are not with you on what you plan on doing

Hi jb. Thank you for your reply but how did the mashes for the pre face-lift differ from the ones for the face-lifted versions. Also the R171 would also appear to be the same

The three attached links show all of the mesh screens to be the same !!

All I can tell you is the part numbers are different so the parts did change between models, if this means that it won't fit due to size I don't know.

I would have said just that Jeff.

Probably something that has to tried to get a definitive answer.

The windbreaker mesh relies on being pulled taught to stay in place. The shape of the roll hoops are different between the R170 and R171 so I can't see it working out.

I was about to suggest this very idea. Get all the part numbers and cross check. I am with Jeff. Too many small and not necessarily changes between NFL and FL versions that are subtle and could make all the difference.

On my first version of the R170 I got the strap on plexiglass unit and it worked fine except I have to keep tightening the straps,

On the current one it came with the piece that bolts on under the clips on the bulkhead behind the seats and covers the area between the roll hoops. Given the choice I would go for the full width because I find with this one that while it works to keep she who will be listened to's hair in place there is still a draft as air penetrates under the roll hoop and seems to find my neck. In hot weather no problems but in the cooler weather or at night I always make sure I have a scarf handy.

To each his own

Oh!
Awkward realisation.

With different sized and shaped roll bars, the chance that they are same forthe two models is nil.

Now, I bought a secondhand one for my R170 a year ago, but it was loose, by about an inch.
I could not see how the top seam could stretch, or how it could have pulled from its stitching with this being visible.
Now I wonder if I was sold a R171 one by mistake. So I have to try it on the later car to test.

You may make it fit but it probably won't work. If there's any slack in the mesh that will flap around in the wind and will probably get annoying over time. Bear in mind too that any mesh fabric that is 10-15 years old plus will be fragile when stretching it over the roll bars and could give way easily.

(Slightly off topic - only slightly, but: )

@ARoosterinaRoadster I tried the mesh on Silkie and it lasted about 100 miles. It works, but rear visibility is drastically reduced.

I bided my time and found a used perspex deflector for mine - for much the same price as a genuine MB mesh. That was fitted and has remained on the car ever since, lid up or down. At some point I will need to take it off and recondition it after all the debris that must have hit it, but that seemed the best solution to me. Mrs. Savcom is much happier with this fitted as she has regained control of her hair when the top is down! Always a good thing.

Hi to you all out there. Well I have got myself a windbreaker screen for my 2004 SLK R170 Face-lift. It was bought off of E'bay for the sum of Ł49.95 plus Ł6.95 carriage.
It came via Parcels2Go.com/Hermes in a stout cardboard tube and is indistinguishable from new.
The fit is extremely tight and should prevent any flapping about at speeds of up-to 70mph.

Earlier today I had been over to a friends house where he has an early R170 1997 variant, the windbreaker is a totally different fit at the position of the hoops by having a restrainer strap that passes through a metal buckle like piece but without the buckle pin,the small strap then is pulled up and fastens onto the side of the part of the screen that is over the hoop.
The lower edge of the screen between the hoops has two rectangular rings that are used in retaining tension in the middle when they are pulled down and located on two hooks that are fastened to the 'backboard' behind the seats.

Hi jb. I was not denying that one bit but there was nothing coming back about what the differences actually were.

As I had pointed out on one of the other MB forums the hoops are actually the same albeit the factory fitted ones are mostly covered in a black vinyl and as I understand the chrome version were either special order of after-market.

MB are not going to alter the width of the screens just because the SLK R170 has a face-lift but clearly they did make changes to the method of attachment no doubt because there were complaints about the early screens becoming lose and flapping causing draughts about ones neck/back of the head and subsequently needing continual adjustment so as to regain the tension.

Having actually handled an early R170 screen I can confirm that the screens whilst the same shape have two totally different methods/fittings for the attachment onto/over the hoops.
The later version uses the tried and trusty Tenax system of screw-in post with lock-nut and a spring loaded dome headed button.
The posts are available with either a machine threaded shank or a self tapping shank and both have provision for the use of a tiny spanner.

https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/tena...c6Chz-n8s2bXj0

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272666353348?ul_noapp=true

The factory items are given a protective coating against corrosion/rust.

I wonder if I have a face lift version of my windbreaker... I pulled it from a scrap-yard car not knowing about different part numbers.

It technically fits, but there is no method for attaching at the top of the hoops.

it can be seen in the attached picture.

Anyone use the cloth windbreaker?
If so, can you help identify where the hooks go/are?

I do and if I can slip out to the car park during my work break I'll take a couple of pics for you. The post-FL is definitely link 2 from post #3 above, no hoop clips on the post-FL

EDIT
I really should amend that to "no top hoop clips on the post-FL" as the top of the mesh screen on the hoops is elasticated and is held in shape via shape and tension. Otherwise, fittings are as Rooster said they are:
