if you believe wiki, by date, you have a facelift r170 so the engine hp would be higher

SLK230
Kompressor 1996–2000 M111.973
2.3 L I4 supercharged 142 kW (190 hp)
at 5,300 rpm 280 N⋅m (207 lb⋅ft)
at 2,500–4,800 rpm 7.4 s

2000–2004 M111.983
2.3 L I4 supercharged 145 kW (194 hp)
at 5,500 rpm 280 N⋅m (207 lb⋅ft)
at 2,500 rpm 7.2 s

Hi,

Get WIS / EPC and using your VIN, print the Datacard for the vehicle, that is the only way to be absolutely certain

HTH,

Cheers Dave

Aha even better ............... Result

I always advise Members over on Benzworld to buy WIS / EPC discs at around £10 - £15 , worth their weight in gold

Also, SDS is a must for serious DIY'ers, anyone who has it will know what I mean, it is sooooooooooo much more than just a Diagnostic Scanner, and it will pay for itself over and again.
No, I don't sell Software or Equipment

I started my latest Garage business off the back of an SDS purchase to help maintain my personal 'fleet' of MB's, and since then I have bought various other dealer level machines for popular "lesser" Cars on our roads here

Came to the NW to be semi retired, got bored with that and now busier than when I had the big Garage down south

Cheers Dave

You would think so but if you run OPs VIN through WIS it really does come up as a 958/230 ...

Quote:
Datacard for vehicle identification number:
WDB1704492F221743

Engine number ... 111958 32 145552
Sales des. ..... SLK 230 KOMPRESSOR

And a 200 for comparison:

how very odd

thats very odd. can you check whether you have the supercharger with the grey or the black pulley? 2.3 evo engine has the grey pulley while 2.0 uses a black, bigger one. if not modded. thats the only difference to spot from outside as far as I know. also instrument cluster has a hidden menu that shows engine size. my 958 shows 2.0 L, but I dont remember how to enter that menu anymore.

edit: 2.3 has sc# ...10 80 vs 2.0 ...09 80

EPC lists your engine as "111958 M111 E20 EVO ML" means it's a 1998cc engine.
More interesting, you have "deleted type designation SLK 230" on rear lid from the factory (code -260).

You have a 200K engine on a 449 body instead of 444, most likely. Should be very rare.

As the datacard shows sales des as SLK230 I would as ask for a refund from MB, or a real 2.3 engine swap

It'd be rarer still if it's Portuguese + a few other countries spec 192hp as per the 2ltrs were designed to be in the first place, is there any way to check that without putting it on a dyno?

those have 943 engine code. probably not because 2.0 192hp version uses m62 eaton sc, the one with the clutch.
