Is my Passenger Side Mirror supposed to Dip?

I seem to remember that both my 1998 and 2006 MB E class cars had passenger side mirrors that dipped when in reverse to show the curb better. The passenger side mirror in my SLK32 does not dip. Is it supposed to? It would make reversing a lot easier.

The problem is that there is no DCM's or complex Body CAN in an R170.

I did (briefly) think it might be cool to try building "Frankenmirrors" from C Class power folders and incorporate the DCMs somewhere ..................

The lack of complex CAN Buses on R170 make it not worth the effort IMHO

It was lack of a full Body / Interior CAN that lead me to spend a load of dosh on getting hard wired functionality for steering wheel buttons and paddle shifters, whilst doing my Android Install................

That IMO was worth the effort, and again IMO the Steering Wheel I chose is still in keeping with the retro look of the Cars interior, most ordinary folks who see my Car do not realise that anything in the Car is not standard fitment, apart from the Active Sub mounted between the Seats.

Basically anything can be done, but projects like this need a lot of R+D, which entails buying a lot of used parts off EBay, half of which end up in the bin, also for me at least, a lot of modifying circuits to work hard wired proved to be a steep learning curve in micro soldering.

Not one I would be prepared to repeat for Folding and Dipping Door Mirrors, on what is really an "old skool" Roadster, it is that very "old skool" but with background tech that I love about these Cars :)

I think I have a C Class Powerfold Mirror somewhere in the workshop loft, maybe one day when everything else is done to the Car I may try and get the Mirrors to powerfold upon Ignition on / off, by using a simple timer relay ;)

Ah, this makes sense.

In my mind, I was thinking that if the MSRP was around $60k when new why didn't it have the dipping mirror like my old E's which were also around that MSRP. I forget that the SLK32 AMG was the top of the line and it was still built off of a relatively cheap(er) car.

Hi @SnowCub

Sounds like a bit of "Forum R&D" is needed here >:D

FWIW, if you can identify the up and down motor wires behind your A pillar Kick Trims, where they go through to the Door it would be relatively easy to tap into these, and use a suitable Timer Relay or 2 to be triggered from reverse lamps to dip and raise the mirror ........................
Perhaps an electronics whizz could produce a circuit to do this, may be a better option.

The trick / difficulty would be to set the Relays "run times" so the mirror ends up exactly where you want it dipped, and then set up the "return" run time to get it back to normal driving position again

I'd imagine it would take a lot of fiddling with the run times to get it right, and I am not certain it would return the mirror to exactly the same "regular driving" position every time due to other factors that may affect the exact speed that the motor runs at ..................

For example outside temperature and humidity etc etc ................

I have a funny feeling that my S Class and C Class that have dipping mirrors might have Hall Sensors in them, otherwise how does the memory function work ?? I don't know for sure as I've never looked at this in any depth

Will never know unless one of us tries, a cool project for anyone who has the time, which due to running a busy Workshop I don't right now, so for me Mirrors is not a priority atm.

Finding a suitable S / CL / CLK 500 with M113 V8 as a donor Car for my impending V8 Conversion is the main "hobby" priority right now, as the year is flying by and I want V8 power in the R170 before next Summer >:D

Cheers Dave
