Resolved - Engine A/C cooling fan control module

Hi all
Got a starting problem, namely, it don't ! I'm saying it's an engine A/C cooling fan control module issue because when you turn the key, dash lights up as normal and ok, starter doesn't turn at all, but the cooling fan immediately starts (audibly clicks) and quickly steadily climbs to full bore on. It's been good as gold till now, drives well and is my daily ride, and gets used at least every other day. I'm only considering this module because it's linked to the fan - part no: A 018 545 99 32 ESG 400 - that finned silver unit bolted to the passenger inner wing just behind the headlight unit. It's a UK RHD 1999 230 auto with 100k, can't find an OBD11 port, only that round multi pin point in the K40 unit - don't have anything for that, presumably wouldn't tell you much?. It's been fairly well looked after, and obviously get's anything it needs in my attentive care. Before I go and buy this part (2nd hand/scrap dealer - what else can one do), anyone got any idea's please, any help would be much appreciated. Also I've noticed the dipped beam headlights come on when the key is turned, (the lights are turned off at the light switch) but as if in concert with the cooling fan! Also, this problem is intermittent - it started today, I drove it, but later on today wouldn't start (again) and I had to call the tow truck to bring me home - not good.
Thanks a lot
Paul

Hi Paul,
Engine not turning over and fan running full speed is a classic symptom of a faulty K40 relay board. There is a sticky about it on the R170 General Discussion page, or search for slightly shorter threads. You can either re-solder the joints or buy a new one.

This might be related to your lights problem, but I haven't heard of that symptom before.

Oh bummer, hey but thanks Australian, and good-ay buddy. So not worth proceeding down the cooling fan control module theory and therefore concentrating on the pesky K40 yeh? I did search some but couldn't find specifically my problem hence new post. I'll brain up on the K40 as suggested, likely not skilled enough to delicately solder with my gaz-soldering tool, may get mate to or buy one you say? Fair enough and thanks again, I'll update with results etc. PS, used to live in Brisbane for a while back in the 80's, wonderful

Does this control the a/c as well? I remembered this module causing the vehicle to overheat when the vehicle is in traffic and the a/c shutdown.

Yes, it does. There is an output from that module to the A/C compressor clutch.

Do you have a schematic to see if I can check power to the clutch?

Watch what you get.
Some ebay sourced K40 are good, some bad.
Have a good read of the k40 threads.

Getting your mucker to reflow solder is probably best starting point.
It's successful most of the time.

Absolutely Myk, but guess what? I've only gone and fixed the lil beggar. Big thanks to Australian and to Bazzle for his well useful sticky post on this matter. Was exactly as he described. True enough, the soldered joints were bad/dry on the 3 pin air pump relay left hand side one, on the K40 unit, all else was good. Just re-soldered with my gas iron (must get a mains powered one, never gets hot enough to melt the solder, but just managed to do enough to scrape through with it) and put back together and it started up a treat. Used it lots over the last couple of days and seems to be fine. And to anyone who reads this, it's been said before on here but I strongly advise you all to take your K40 out and inspect/re-solder any bad joints on it - it could save you a tow truck heart ache incident and maybe more - preventative is always best and once it's done, it's done! SLK Forum rocks - Yahooo!!
