How to change rear cat converters

Does anybody know why mercedes left off a connection with the rear cat converters (I assume that’s what they are. See pic)? I’ve got a rattle in one and it appears to be a be job to replace.

I had one of the brackets fail on my '320. Once welded up again it hasn't given any trouble. Check the brackets to see if one of them has failed

They did something like this on the CLK exhausts too... my guess is it was cheaper to make 2 foot of pipe then put a splice and flange on it. but why they did it to just one side.... not sure. if you take it to an exhaust guy, you could have him put another flange on it to make it easier.
