Question 1999 SLK 230 Odd whining noise

Hi

I have a 1999 SLK 230 which seems to have developed an odd whining noise under particular circumstances.

No noise whilst in gear & accelerating, but when i take my foot off the accelerator pedal an odd whining noise can be heard. This happens whilst in gear and whilst out of gear. Hard to pinpoint the exact location of the whine but I believe it is coming from behind.

It also happens whilst driving forward (any gear) and in reverse.

The noise still persists when I've taken it out of gear & rev the engine.

Other than this noise, there appears to be no other symptoms.

Any ideas? My local garage thinks it may be the gearbox but I am not so sure. Thanks for any help you have provide.

There are several threads on this forum about noisy diffs. It appears to be fairly common. Mine does it too. You could search and see if it happens in the same circumstances.

What type of transmission do you have? It's difficult to diagnose stuff over the internet but if you could post a clip of the sound (shoot a vid and load it to you tube) it would be helpful.

rear diff.

Drain oil. Refill as specced, make sure you get the right amount in.

It'll probably last longer that you are prepared to put up with the noise and it's barely worth doing anything about as a full diff rebuild or replacement is going to cost 1/2 as much as the car is worth.

Did I ever tell you about the time I had the rear diff of a Land Rover Discovery lock solid at 70mph plus on the A22 just outside Brighton .........

An interesting few seconds!
