Check Engine Light Endless Error

2002 SLK320 it all began with wanting the Check Engine light off as in fixed not black tape despite the car apparently running just fine IMHO. Actually using a scanner this time, cheap Memoscan orange CAN OBD2 U480 which does retrieve codes and can clear them. Began with P0105 MAP/BARO circuit malfunction. Easy enough, ordered a brand new MAF on ebay, installed it and cleared code. Code changed to P0410 Secondary air induction system. Googled that and another MB forum suggested changing out the Check Valves, EGR Valve, Air Pump. Due to price obtained a pair of used Check Valves and installed them with new gaskets and cleared codes. A good high speed 70 mph run returned the codes for 171 and 174 System too lean Banks 1 and 2. This happened once, after clearing has not returned during local runs around town. Gas MPG improved from 12 to 17 only one fillup since change so will wait and see what the future holds. Clearing these bounced me back to 410, ordered a brand new OEM EGR and installed today and cleared code, only to get 410 back. Only thing left would be the little blue valve in the EGR line and the air pump, or put back the old MAF and live with 105 if that's any advantage over 410.

I do find it strange the car has to be turned off and the key removed and restarted for check engine to come on and codes to be available, potential to drive a hundred miles or more with check engine poised to come on at next restart.

I suspect the answer will lie in a proper DAS/STAR diagnos code read.

However, I'll flag this post to some of our best experts on the 170:

My air pump setup looks like this one on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Air-Pump-ME...ZaVV43&vxp=mtr anyone know what that little metal pipe is supposed to do? With the engine running I held a card over it and then a finger, nothing in or out. Put a light on it, appears to bottom out. The real question is, how to tell if the air pump is working/running or not? Don't really want to spend $150 for a star reader to see if I need a $50 used air pump, though avoiding the new $500 one might be worth it.

When I was doing research into my P0410 code I read that you should be able to feel the pump running if you put your hand on it. It runs for 20-30 seconds after a cold start.

My intermittent P0410 code turned out to be an easy fix for me - it was the infamous K40 solder joints. I didn't have any other codes with mine though.

There is lots of information on the P0410 if you search; on this site and also in the ML section on Benzworld site (lots of our engines in those cars). I didn't come across anyone with codes flipping between P0410 and others.

Good luck with it.

@RobertP
For code P0410 DAS give 3 extra codes, but all 3 are related to MAF and the relay for air pump K40k6.
I will start with that relay K40k6

The valves are common culprits, replacing with used is a dicey proposition.

Removed the air filter housing and then the hose that connects the air pump to the check valves and started the car, strong blast of air from the air pump, like it could double as a leaf blower, so I'm assuming no problem there. All back together, cleared codes and went for a ride, still 410. Pulled the K40 and stared at it, expensive to replace new, used likely to have a worse solder job then mine, though I only did the one obvious contact pair that was burnt out. Fuses all good. I'll add it to my ebay search list, every so often something pops for a good price.

Thanks, I can see that after the replacement of the little blue 128 check valve and maybe the K40 and maybe the O2 sensor after that I'll be over my head. So strange because the car has always run strong before and after.

Agreed but I liked the odds, $60 right $20 left for a total of $80 versus hundreds each new. Bought from a seller on ebay that had 5 of each, figured if I could tell they were bad I could at least get another pair. Things didn't get worse, maybe a little bit better though hard to tell the car always running strong, maybe the old ones were good enough. Have to work it this way as a visit to the dealer terrifies me.

Too bad MB didn't use an off the shelf A0005400072 I can pick them up used in the twenties and thirties, the A1705450305 they went with is over a hundred used, $218 new. I don't want to start messing around without a life boat.

Update: Ordered one A1705450305 now A170545030505 brand new from mercedespartscenter.com for $155 plus shipping $168 they don't offer a picture so I don't know if the fuses are included or not. Autohaus was the same as ebay.

On re-reading, I have a question: if you had a MAP code, why did you replace the MAF?

[QUOTE=efair;4113969]On re-reading, I have a question: if you had a MAP code, why did you replace the MAF?[/QUOTEI

I started with 105 the error code book said that was MAP, I figured that was just more of their bad Engrish and edited it to MAF in my mind. Am I now about to learn there actually is a 105 MAP code that means something different, OMG. Anyway hardly matters as 105 went away and 410 has been the problem ever since I replaced the Mass Air Flow tube sensor thing under the air filter housing.

Ok looked it up there is a MAF the big tube and a MAP small thing with a hole was the only description in the thread I found, looks like it goes next to the EGR.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/c208...placement.html

Found it, simple, but the one in the car is A0041533228 with two star bolt holes one hanging open in the air, can't believe that's how MB intended it to be so maybe it isn't the right sensor or maybe I can buy one with one bolt hole.

I started with nothing and through determination and hard work I still have most of it left.

Needed a hobby that wouldn't end with a restraining order, this car fits the bill.

Update: Got a new MAP ebay auction said OEM but item itself says Japan nothing else no star no nothing, looks like the old one except no number. Got a brand new K40. In short the new MAP and new K40 are both now in the car and I still have the cleared and comes back 410 check engine. That's it, all the parts suggested, New MAP, New MAF, New K40, Used Check Valves, New Small Blue Valve, New EGR, what's next? Oh and my fuel gauge didn't magically start working again either <sigh>.
