Telescopic Steering won't lock

Hi.. and welcome to my first post on my first day of 98 SLK230 ownership. curious if anybody here has had any issues with the telescopic steering not locking in place? the lever pulls out, column slides... lever slides back and appears to lock. yet column still slides forward and back. have the dash apart and looked at the mechanism and I can't figure out what's wrong. thanks in advance for any advice.

thanks for the quick reply. surprisingly my old SLK did come with the owners manual. so i am operating the steering correctly it's just not doing what it's supposed to. I'll dig a little deeper into it tomorrow and try to get a better view of the mechanical action.

I'll be sure to post when i get it fixed. in the meantime, I think i found the culprit. part called Steering Cylinder. another little gas strut that appears to have lost it's fluid. appears that's what locks the column in place. rather pricey at $150. can you anybody confirm if they've replaced this before for a similar situation?

telescoping steering fixed. confirming that the "steering lock cylinder" part# 202-462-02-82 was indeed the culprit. replacement wasn't that difficult since I had virtually all of the interior removed from the car anyway. that cylinder appears to have leaked all of its fluid out. symptoms were mushy movement of column and would not securely lock in position. $150 part.

Question

I had a similar issue with the column not really locking. I've gotten the cylinder ($157 List, but I got mine for about $128 delivered from MercedesPartsCenter) and can see the rod end of it under the dash. The other (fixed) end (its about 10" long with a lever action valve actuator build into the rod end) is mounted up toward the steering wheel under the column shroud.

I wasn't able to figure out how to loosen the shroud to get to the fixed end of the cylinder (the shroud will need to either slide down a bit or come off) and it was getting dark . . . so I'll try again tomorrow morning. (After F1 qualifying of course. LOL)

Anyone ever deal with the cylindrical shroud around the column?

Question It's usually the "easiest" things . . . . Grrr!

Finally trying to get the locking cylinder replaced, though I don't really have a solid plan. It looks like you have to go down the steering column, removing the wheel to then remove the shroud, so you then can replace the cylinder!!

So I have managed to get the airbag assembly loose, but I can't seem to get the electrical connector out. (I have disconnected the + on the battery, though I see now that a number say the -. Anyone have a reason why? So I've actually disconnected both at this point.)

I'd hate to just start yanking on the thing; most seem to have some tricky little release motion, but I can't find it. Can anyone give me a hint? (I'm not sure that just disconnecting the airbag (yellow connector) will give me enough room for pulling the wheel away. Or do you just have to bit the bullet and disconnect the spades separately? (Which will be what I'll do if I can get the main plug loose.))

As an aside, is the connector on the left there for any particular reason?

Exclamation Got it!

But this is certainly not a job for anyone who isn't limber or can't work upside down. (And it doesn't help that I have no garage and it's been 100F and sunny most of the day.) I'll try to write something up in a day or so, and I have a few pictures too. (Though not of how I somehow managed the "impossible" bits.)

I'm trying to get the rest of the column back together now, and I hope I haven't lost any of the alignments. The funkiest one is a little "pulley" that sits on top of the column, (under the shroud) which allows the actuation cable for the cylinder to be operated. It has a notch to capture a lug on the cable which (perhaps) keeps the spring from pulling the cable back too far; it also provides a bit of mechanical advantage and perhaps allows the cable to trigger a release mechanism . . . . But it sure seems like a lot of fuss for what it does.
