Please can you Help!! R170 Alarm Siren making high pitched noise.

Please help, my SLK 230 1997 alarm siren near the main battery is making a constant high pitched sound. If i drive the car for half an hour it stops. If I do not drive the car for 24 hours it starts making the noise again.

Is there anything else that could be causing this other than the alarm siren needs replacing?

Thanks

Hi, The door locks are working as they should. If it were the pse wouldn't it cause other problems? Will still check the pse though, Thanks.

Looks like there is a back up battery. Lots of alarms sound off if the back up is dying Maybe thats why it stops after you have drive as its getting some charge but not holding it

Yes, the alarm has its own backup battery. Pop the hood open. Lock the car with the key fob. Wait 1 minute for alarm to activate. Then try disconnecting negative terminal =) The alarm will immediately go off. Connect the terminal back and disarm the alarm with the key fob. The sound without the battery will be a little lower. If you don't have any angry neighbors around you can try this experiment and see how long your alarm will last without the car battery =)
Also, many blame the PSE. I think it's because it operates all the vacuum in your car and e.g. you lock your car and something won't lock since there's a vacuum leak (doors, gas lock door, trunk, etc.) it doesn't activate the trigger and system thinks someone broke in =)

Rechargeable battery in alarm module will eventually fail. It has happened in other cars I have owned. If that is the case you can try to replace the battery on the module or get a new module for ~ $200.

I removed the no 9 fuse from the fuse box on the driver's side corner of yhe engine bay and got a medium volumn high pitch sound. I plugged it back in and my alarm (very loud cycling schrill)went off. I silenced it by holding down the key fob panic button. I think it's a means to make the alarm tamper proof. Could it be that your system is in that tamper alarm mode. Replace or check the no 9 fuse.

Mine's a left hand drive.

Thanks, I have checked the no 9 fuse. It looks fine and tested it had resistance. I will buy a new fuse and replace though just in case. The roof dome light comes on could this mean no 9 fuse is ok?

I don't know the answer to the dome light question but I'm not thinking it's the fuse especially since you've checked continuity. If you'll notice JasonM's comment above... he states the two different alarm sounds I'm referring to; #9 fuse installed that connects the alarm(very loud with my head under the bonnet) to the main battery and #9 fuse removed that forces the backup battery to power the alarm(not nearly as load). You may want to rule-out the main alarm that most on your thread are commenting about by removing #9 and determining whether you still here it or not. Be aware that my car's layout may be different from yours. You can check my profile but I have a 2003 SLK320. It should be close. The other thing that comes to mind is for you to purposely set the alarm so that you may determine if its the same sound. I hope ye graft(work) it out!
