Auto Dimming Side View Mirrors question

I'm in the process of ordering a new auto dimming mirror for the drivers side of my car. It seems there was a couple of different types for my year car. One of the mirrors has a brown and a blue wire that go to the top and bottom of the mirror connected by a square plug. The other has a round plug that plugs into the lower right corner if you are looking at the back of the mirror. My car has the round plug. The mirror I'm looking at buying has the 2 wire/square plug. The guy I'm buying it from said that he thought one wire was for heating, the other for dimming...but that can't be so. There would need to be 4 wires instead of 2 if there were 2 loads...1 for supply, one for return (ground). At any rate, with the plug difference, can I make this mirror work for me?

I think I have a different solution. I need some confirmation though. The R170 parts are supposed to be compatible between 98 and 2004 from what I understand. Some parts over those years are slightly different but I think can be interchanged. I found a mirror from an 02 SLK320. It looks really decent and has the auto dimming and the price I can definitely live with.

The only issue is I'd need to get one for the passenger side to match and I'd have to run a blinker wire most likely which is a piece of cake. Does anyone know for sure if I can swap that out to a 230?

The mirror you are looking to buy only has 2 wires? I think this will not suit your car. It should physically fit no problem but what about the wires for the adjustment motors. 5 wires are the usual number (non indicator) and I think 6 wires with the indicator mirror. In the UK the wiring plug is in-line not square or round so I can't help on that. See attached image. Forgot to add - the wires for the auto dim are on a seperate 2 wire connector.

I can't find a diagram to help. Also, looking at the diagram for the outside mirrors there is no mention of the auto-dimming function. The diagram just shows the heater and movement controls for each mirror but not the auto dimming. However there is the following comment in the supporting text:

Quote:
With various vehicle equipment and national versions it is possible to fold the outside rearview mirrors down, out and automatically dim the outside rearview mirror on the driver's side.
Looking further, on SLKs fitted with an internal dimming mirror, there is a grey/yellow wire from N7-1 pin 9 (the light module) and a pink/red/black wire from fuse 7B that lead to a connector labelled as X49/5. This should be your jump off point for the auto dimming door mirrors.

Also, just to confuse things, only facelift R170's had indicators in the door mirrors. Make sure the mirror you buy matches the mirror on your car!!

I hope this helps.

The drivers side does have 2 sets of wires (2 plugs) and the passenger only has 1 set of wires (1 plug).

Driver side mirror

Passenger side mirror

I presume that means that the driver side does in-fact have the dimming mirror. The dimming mirrors also look different than the standard mirrors. Hopefully my nievity and no fear of electric circuits/wiring don't get the best of me. If it works the way I think it should, best case scenario is I will simply have to tap into the turn signal on each side of the car and run wires to the new mirrors. Worst case scenario I have to re-wire a couple of things. Well, I guess worst-est(sp?) would be that the mirrors don't fit but I don't think that will be the case. Even if they don't work, I only paid $135 for the set which is a steal from what I can tell. I will have to break these both down to re-paint to match my car so I will get a real good look of the insides. It should be fun to figure out at any rate. I love this kind of stuff.

Yes, the driver side mirror is wired for a auto dim. You don't have to wire in the indicator function but would look nice with it working and the price is a steal. Good luck with it all.

Yes, I am definitely going to wire in the turn signals. I can't do things all half arsed. It would drive me crazy. I have ADHD and OCD so you may be able to get a picture of how my mind works .
