Clunky shift changes - what should I get Merc Independent to check on Saturday?
Firstly thanks to those who posted on my Tranny Oil Change question the other week, I have decided to take my R170 to a Merc Independent to identify progressively rough gear shift changes.
The symptoms are:
- Gear changes a bit rough especially on the downshift rather than the upshift but slowly getting worse and more frequent.
- I get a clunk sometimes as I come to a roundabout as it changes from 3rd-2nd or I think 2nd to 1st.
What should I get the Merc Independent to check, they are going to charge me Ł60 to plug in and check the codes and look around, but should they check any bushes or mountings or is it simply one of the clutches is on the way out inside the tranny?
I have been told if its one of the two clutches in the transmission then its a total rebuild as it breaks up and all bits get into all sorts of places in the box, I can't believe every time a clutch fails it means a Ł1200 bill!
Do the 2 clutches do different jobs?
If anyone can give me their thoughts as I am reluctant to spend any money on it until I have a firm diagnosis.
