Misc issues

Hi Guys, my 2001 320 went under during the hurricane....Im trying to reserect it...So far, have it running well, but waiting on a charcoal canister...
currently have a p0500 code, and the speedometer is intermittent..
also bas esp and abs lights...cleaned the speed sensor and wheel, seemed to have some effect but quit again....
rear pse is not working but connected...there seem to be many interconnected systems...brake light works, turn signals work,
redid the seat relay and have one motor working on the drivers side so they are getting power...
srs light is on but i think it can be inspected
anyway..advice welcome....dave

do a search for pse

if it is wet, you will experience all those issues

it was wet, motor does not run, circuit board appeared ok, , i had to open the roof to acces the trunk, but have power to the pse because i heard other r systems were dependent on it...did not really want to buy another till i see if the charcoal canister will allow emissions to be ready for inspection..although i have no emissions codes at the moment , just the 0500..the cannister was flooded, i drained it but the fill tube check valve is now closed...

The P0500 code relates to a faulty speed sensor or several faulty sensors if they got wet. Try cleaning and drying the plugs and sockets first on all four wheels and some moisture repellent. This P0500 code will light up all the MIL's that you have showing. Also change the brake pedal switch just to eliminate it.
The other codes such as SRS will need to be plugged in to diagnostics to find fault.

First thought: if you are getting "P" codes, that is a generic OBD-II reader and not one that can review all of the different systems in a Mercedes for specific issues. Carly Pro for Mercedes is great but is only for 2005 and later. I just spent a buck and a half for an iCarsoft MBII (not an i980) to be able to read all of the systems in my R170s. Also any P code that ends with 00 is a generic "something is rong" code and is not specific.

Second thought is there is something wrong with a convertible that will not shift out of Park if it gets left out in a rain shower. Really needs a tonneau cover. Good news is that once mine completely dried out, everything worked again.

But with a car that has multiple issues, you really need to get it scanned by something specific to your Merc.

his was a cherry 30 k like new slk before the hurricane so i hate to give up easy,,,should have the charcoal canister tomorrow, and if it allows the fuel fill valve to work and emissions to clear, i can inspect it and then justify more expense to fix other issues....on the 0500 code, i dont understand if its the sensor why does the code come on before the car moves, when there is no signal? i thoroughly cleaned the left sensor and right and the ribbed wheel on the left and it caused the speedo to work for a while but just quit again and still had the 500 code....or can it sense that they are connected, (or Not) and fault if it does not see them?

It is a brake pedal position sensor and does more than the brake lights.
Surely things like airbags, lateral acceleration sensor, gearbox module etc will have been contaminated with water.
Sounds a big ask to put all right if it was covered.

If there is no valid Insurance, by all means have a go (or is it goo - how clean was the water?) If it had been salt water, ouch...

But, anyways, expect corrosion to set in, repeated problems over time, strange error messages and other, mainly electric/electronic problems that come and go. Some Circuits may have been Active, they corrode quickly, even in fresh water.

One tedious but necessary chore is to open up every connector that may have been under water, blow it dry and spray with electronics corrosion protecting spray. Generic fix-it-all lube sprays are not for this.

Then, cleaning misbehaving electronic boards, fuse blocks and the like with distilled water and a gentle drying (hair dryer, not heat gun...) may save you a few replacements.

Best of luck, but be warned, insurance companies total these cars for a reason. But if you are prepared to spend time, go ahead.

If you want to save it, you have a lot of work to do. First, pull the seats and carpeting out. They need to be cleaned and dried thruroughly or you'll get mold problems. Same with the trunk. Same with the headliner. Next (after you remove the battery) use something like this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Quick-Dry...3=2448&veh=sem

On every connection you can get your hands on. Next, drain Oil, Transmission and differential fluids and replace. I'd probably do the brakes as well.
