What to salvage from an SLK32 AMG?

Hello SLK Friends

Sad to report, someone crashed into my 2002 SLK32 AMG while it was parked. Thankfully no one was hurt but my car is basically all bent up and a write-off. I was on holiday and came home to find the car shunted 6 metres down the road and looking like the attached sad picture.

Are there any special bits I should salvage before I get the scrapman to come?

Jonathan.

edited out a totally irrelevant comment.

Hit and run? I'm thinking of police reports, other driver's insurance?

And if the other driver's insurance, if you get a settlement, you can't take anything off it. It's their car at that point.

some people

I hope they caught the arse who did that to your car. It's a crying shame to see that.
I'd say seats, hi-fi head unit, rugs, mats,, anything you can take off easily and store until you move them on or install them in your next r170. if you have the cup-holding centre drawer, they go for an unholy price to other owners.

Depends on how much storage room you have but certainly the electronic and hydraulic modules (and there are many). The shifter and electronic module beneath it. Those look later than stock SLK32 wheels but the one pushed back may be bent. Shipping is not bad on the smaller pieces.

Depends on if you want another. If so, cheap enough from insurance company, keep it all. But only if you want the 32. Lots of not to be found pieces. If you can strip part of it, keep the wheels, they are stock 32's, see my sig pic. If stripping, the S/C, and be sure and private message some of the 32 techies on here. Hate to see another one bit the dust! Wish I was closer.

Also keep in mind that the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 shares most of the special underpinnings with a SLK32, are quite a few in Europe.

That is a pretty wheel, thought it was later and the AMG wheel did not have split spokes.

Oh no! Very sorry to hear that! What a thing to come home to!

As others have said, all non-bent parts could be re-sold. All the control modules will go well on eBay (I'd be tempted to try the SLK32 transmission control unit in my 320 - should make for faster gear changes..... )

Door panels, seats, dash and console parts. Wheels (May be worth seeing if the front one is damaged), exhaust, front wing (for that AMG look) the twin-pipe exhaust tip and rear bumper, head lights (particularly if OEM Xenon/HID)

How much space do you have? Can anyone nearby help with the stripping?

Do you have a wind deflector? Any other mods? Is the rear view mirror an auto-dimming version - and is it still working?

I hope you get a suitable outcome from that - I really do.

From the looks of things it only needs a fender and some suspension parts. The hood even seems to close.

I would either fix it or sell it complete as is to someone who is willing to repair it.

Yes everything apart from the shell then box it up an send it to me haha. But on a serious note everything has a price and scrap man will give sod all compared to breaking it yourself. Then ringing the scrap man after to remove the shell.

Thanks for kind words.

I'm waiting for the opinion from my garage who are very competent, hope to hear from them tomorrow. But their initial view was it was going to be "uneconomic", especially as rear is bent up too, see pic. On the other hand, according to wikipedia there were only 263 sold in the UK, so it's a pretty rare beastie.

Parts to strip all sound very good things ... though best for someone who has a garage: I have no space at all and frankly am not that handy with this kind of thing.

Don't worry about driver of the other car, we know exactly who it is and at least initially they've agreed to pay for the repair. I'm wondering if I shouldn't scrap this one and get a v similar replacement if that would be cheaper. I'll let you know how my negotiations with them go! They also made a mess of my neighbour's Z3, ripped off the rear bumper and so on. With just one little Fiat Panda.

Regards to all

I think as it's a rare beast I would definitely think about repairing it. At the current market prices it must be more economical to repair. Hell I would be down the scrappy looking for parts to fix it and do it myself if it was mine as the damage all looks to be to the bolt on/off parts. I wouldn't want to scrap such a great car.

Sad to see your car has ended up like that.

If you do have to scrap it it would be good if it went to a chap called Mick Ewins who specializes in used spares for the R170's. At least some benefit would come from the recycled parts. If it comes to the worst and it is a total loss and it's yours to dispose of give him a call. His number is 07886 364366 and he is in Reading. I don't think he will mind his number being on here as he advertises it on ebay etc.

What is one worth as scrap value? Maybe best to use a specialist dismantler who would hopefully appreciate the value of the parts as a whole and not give you just metal weight value eg 150. I scrapped a X type jag and only got 114 using an online auction site for car breakers, my local scrappy wanted to pay me 40, so it pays to look around. I think most people would pay that money just for spares for their car or upgrading a stock 320. But you would definitely make more by selling it off in bits yourself which is hard to do if you don't have the space and time.

... thanks for suggestions. One online scrap merchant offered 2. I'm sure there's more than that in the crack of the seat.

Something tells me I'm in for a trying couple of days.

Jonathan, if you have the time and space I would dismantle the car myself contact some local MB Clubs in the EU you will make more $$$ than what a breaker yard will give you for it and you might even make some new friends.

If I had the money I would of gladly bought it as a whole to transfer to my 320, but sadly Christmas and four kids have wiped out any chance of me making an offer. But it always pays to look around for a better offer so just keep looking, try googling Merc dismantles aswell as they will travel to get their hands on a 32amg for parts and probably pay abit more. If all else fails try listing on eBay as spares/repairs and set a reserve and hopefully it will go like that. Good luck I hope it works out for you. I am truly gutted I have no funds would of been a great winter project swapping it all over.
