HID Projector conversion

My halo projectors have been in use for a couple of years with the standard 50w halogen H1 bulbs. I swapped the light units on to the new car a couple of weeks ago and ordered some HID H1 55w 5000k bulbs and ballasts.

The bulbs did not just drop into the light fittings! The new HID's glass was just too fat to go into the fittings on the high beam sites. 5 minutes with a dremel and a grinding bit and I'd knocked off the high spots on the sheet metal mounts.

The low beam units have a more substantial cast aluminium mounting receptacle so reaming them out took a couple more minutes with the dremel and a course sanding drum attachment.

I was concerned that with the fit not being out-of-the box I might have some aiming issues but I fired them up and it all looks great. Light pattern is well defined and the colour is crisp white. brightness looks excellent.

Another hour or so and I can take a quick run to see how well they are working!

Will mount the ballasts and tie up the wiring more securely tomorrow.

Update:

A quick blast round the lanes last night. Brilliant! No excuse for the pun!

The low beams need to come up a few degrees but with brights on even the tiny country lanes around here can be approached with abandon!
