SLK32 AMG little over 200 miles on 1/2 tank

Trip from Austin to Dallas...Got over 200 miles with just half a tank!

Just to think, I almost bought a 230 or 320 because I was worried about gas mileage...

That's encouraging as I am having a look at two tomorrow, which includes a 520 mile round trip.

my lead foot pretty well trashes my mileage....though the small tank necessitating frequent fill-ups makes the mileage appear worse, at least I hope so...I havent actually calculated it, but I didnt buy an econobox for a reason!!

Had mine for almost 10 years, regularly get 17.5 in town,23 on a trip.
I now fill up (Costco!) about every 2 weeks.
Compare with my 73 Mustang, 8.5 mpg BUT a tank lasts for 6 weeks!

If you are basing your miles per gallon estimate on looking at the gas guage - it can be very misleading. The only way to know is to start with a full tank, drive the 200 miles, then refill the tank. Then you can figure your actual miles per gallon, once you know exactly how many gallons were used.

If you did go 200 miles on 6 gallons of gas - that would be 33.33 mpg - which is unlikely.

If I average 26 mpg at 70 to 80 mph.. I'm happy.

I totally agree about basing any MPG estimates purely on looking at the fuel guage as being misleading.

Just purchased a 2002 SLK32 after much searching (thanks Jeff for all your datacard info's) I can say that I filled the car to the brim at the start of my long journey home (by UK standards) of 320 motorway miles. Fuel light came on at approx 310 miles.

I put 52 litres or 11.4 imp gallons to fill to brim again, thus representing actual fuel used for the journey.

OK as the car was new to me I didn't go too silly as I was listening to every sound and stuck for the majority of the time at 70 mph. But it did include some fairly spirited bursts as it seems that everyone wants to take you on in this car . Man this car can accelerate

This worked out at 28 mpg which I thought for a 350 hp motor was unbelieveable. For note - the fuel guage was actually reading half empty after 200 miles.

I very much doubt that I will achieve this again, but its nice to know it can.

Just my two penneth (cents) worth for what it matters.

To add some trivia:

52 liters would be 13.7 U.S. Gallons - which would yield 23.36 mpg US... {In either case it would be 5.96 miles per liter}

As a modern benchmark - the 2012 Corvette at 3500lbs, 6.2L V8 with 435HP will get 26 mpg US on the highway. That would be 7.4 miles per liter.

FWIW,
Carl B.

Yes,but you're Imperial gallons are huge compared to our pathetic little US gallons......so Carl is quite correct,I get 23 per US gal on a trip in Florida, usually at or just over the 70 mph limit.

This is an interesting thread. I have had my 320 for well over a year, and always watch the guage. After a fill up, give or take a few miles, it has done 110 miles when it hits 3/4 full, 190 miles at the half tank, 270 at the 1/4 mark, and the light comes on at around 310 miles. I usually get 340 to the tank, which equates to 29 MPG (IMP.). My driving style is 95% sub urban / urban commuting and driving for plesure, and 5% hell for leather on roads with no speed limits :-)
