Windshield pin holes and spider crack repairs

I did a thread search [the older ones on the forum are superb] but didn't find much about just windshield crack repairs. I'm talking about something smaller than a dime size.

I've just put out feelings to 5 different companies for repair quotes. I've also put out feelers to 5 indys in the area for under the hood repair quotes. Let's hope I have more luck with the glass repair folks. None of the indy's have provided quote pricing thus far. I digress...

I have seen $99-$165 quotes for repair so far. Anyone else in the midwest have a good experience with a certain glass company OR has anyone tried one of those do it yourself glass repair kits?

I did find a few online, but I cannot bring myself to mess around with the glass. It's not like a paint chip at the bottom of a fender if I screw up the windshield, there is no recourse for that one .

I'd suggest you go to a professional. There are guys that have this special tool and had fixed tons of chips. Here in Houston there's a guy who charges you like $25 a chip repair and gives you discount if you have several of them. He told me the 1st time he can write it off to your insurance since insurance companies rather pay for the chip repair than pay for windshield replacement. Plus you have to use drill and I won't bother doing that =D

9 time out of ten your comp insurance will cover a new windscreen for free, unless you have a deductible.

As LFOD states:

Which States Have Free Auto Glass Replacements?
If you are wondering which states have free auto glass and windshield replacements, you are in the right place! The following states have laws that require insurance companies to replace a signficantly damaged windshield for a driver who has comprehensive insurance:

Arizona
Florida
Kentucky
Massachusetts
New York
South Carolina
If you live in one of these states, have comprehensive insurance, and have a windshield with significant damage, you qualify for free auto glass. Simply call 800-515-2172

Why do these states have laws about free auto glass replacements?

Windshield damages happen all over the world, every day. Many times these cracks come from rocks in the road, but they can even come from really cold weather. When there are very large cracks in windshields, it is dangerous to be on the road. Broken auto glass can hinder the driver's eyesight and cause accidents. Windshield cracks are also dangerous because it makes a windshield weak, which can lead to complete failure. For these reasons, Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Yowk and South Carolina have set up laws concerning free windshield replacements. They have done this because they want to protect their citizens. They do not want people driving around with broken windshields causing even more accidents.

Footnote: South Carolina covers all glass and not only the windshield if you have comprehensive insurance and any repair is non-chargeable for insurance rates.

I ended up taking everyones advice into consideration [thank you guys!] and letting a pro do it. I price shopped the big boys here, and sure enough one called me at the crack of dawn this morning to beat everyone else out.

Windshield will be done today.

I have one set of repairs to do before she is truly season ready... and Im waiting on those estimates as well. CANT wait to just not worry about spring showers and go.

If covered by insurance, would suggest having MB dealership change the windshield. For my R171, Dealership ordered the correct windshield with rain sensors and avoided potential damage by removing the wiper assemblies for greater clearance. Of course you get a replacement MB seal if you are so inclined. All aftermarket windshield are not created equal......

the indy quotes

Well,

Emailing will never work. Not one of them responded. Which means now I have to waste half the day calling, fine, I get it.

However, the glass people just left. I learned some interesting information. The pin hole knicks in the windshield cannot be "fixed" as we would think they could. There is nothing to "drill". So he put some clear resin on them and used the black light to cure them for 5 minutes, then scraped the spot with a razor blade and they were smooth as the rest of the glass. So in this particular case, a $15 DIY kit would have been fine.

Now the other spider crack [that was the size of less than 1/4 an inch] he drilled clear through the glass, then put a mirror on the inside of the windshield, filled it, then black light cured it, scraped it, then put a top sealer on it, cleared it again, scraped it, and knocked on it with his fist to show me it was hard as a rock.

He DID mention that he had to provide a disclaimer. Once they started drilling there was always a possibility that the windshield may crack and need to be replaced.

The repair today cost $70US and is guarenteed for life. If I ever needed a new windshield, and I called them back out, they would apply that $70 I already paid to the cost of a new windshield that totalled $200us. Good to know. The repair was completed in 20 minutes, and they came to me.

Good stuff..onto the next project

Sounds like a pretty good experience. Any chance they were associated with a national fanchise that the rest of us can use, or was it a company local to Chicago?

FYI it's OK to mention the name of the vendor as long as you are not associated with them. It's good to hear about people who do it the right way. We certainly hear about the ones that don't.

Good to know,

I just looked them up and to my surprise they are national and even have some Canadian locations.

http://www.gerbercollision.com/home.asp

And I also need to mention-that because my "2nd" chip wasn't repairable they removed it from the price.

I was quoted the following: $75 for the first repair and $10 for each chip after. The repair guy [he couldn't have been older than 25] also found a 3rd ding, and cured that as well. I did tip him for his extra care to the windshield, he didn't have to do anything else to the tiny nicks but he took it upon himself to go the extra mile.
