SLK320 Wood delamination, options?Di Noc?

Let me reformat and restate this thread a little….

I have a 02 SLK320 that after nearly 12 years is starting to show the expected wear. Recently I started noticing the wood trim starting to delaminate in a couple areas and am torn as to what to do to resolve it.

I obviously could buy new parts from MB, and considering these will only get harder to get as time goes by is probably the smart thing to do. However, the cost of these parts and the fact that I do not expect this car, at least during the time I plan on owning it ever appreciating to the point that I can justify the $300 or so each part I need will cost me.

Another option is to look for salvage or used parts to replace mine with and I actually did this with the lower dash pocket that had a chip in it, but like my own car it is getting on in age and is only a matter of time before it too starts to show its age.

Next I know there are stick on wood grain dash kits that I could get to stick on over my original wood. This is a viable option but it adds thickness to any panel I apply it and fear I couldn’t find any that would match the OEM well enough to match the wood grain steering wheel.

The last option is the cheapest and may be the best route to go… 3M Di Noc is easy to apply and comes in any number of colors that I might be able to match to the OE wood; Bubinga Gloss Wood Grain is one that looks close. Plus if I had to I might, read me might be able to wrap the areas of the steering wheel that is wood if I couldn’t match it, although I do recognize it wouldn’t last.

I guess the big question is, has anyone found a material or color code for Di Noc or similar wrap that matches the OE wood dash in the SLK320’s which I think is call Eucalyptus Burl wood? Either Di Noc or wood stick on kit? Or are there other options? I need the piece around the shifter lever.

Here's the wood that at least from the pictures are close. I ordered some samples from a supplier.

A vinyl wrap such as 3M's has got to be the best way out. Doing the internal panels should be pretty simple and of course you could change appearance too there are carbon patterns, brushed metals and any number of normal colours. It's a great way to refinish stuff.

Cars, planes and boats are using the techniques on the outside regularly now.

Recently I have been investigating wrapping the topsides ( normally clear of the water ) of my 38' yacht. the 25 year old fibreglass is showing its age in a pretty lacklustre finish. I am probably going to test my abilities by white wrapping my old blue 230 as a trial.

I wonder how soon we'll be seeing cars come out of the factory with a plain, base colour anti-corrosion finish with the entire colour coat being applied through vinyl wraps.

Just think how easy it would be to refurb your old car, change colour over a weekend or repair dents or scratches. the idea has a lot going for it.

I've just had a thought ........ hmm. I'll get back to the forum on an idea I've just had!

Yeah, I have had some experience with the vinyl wrap myself, both inside and out. I wrapped the dash of my 2008 VW Passat three different times, in three different colors.

Original

Gloss Black

Brushed Aluminum (black)

I finally settled on the black brushed aluminum but also experimented with carbon fiber on the inside and felt it was too much. I did however do my exterior window frames and badge background in Carbon fiber though.

It all looked pretty good on a black (murdered out car) like my VW, but I for some reason am looking at the SLK with more of a classic car eye and while I have no issues with modifying it, am leaning towards keeping it stock in appearance, or at least maintaining that classiness that wood brings.

I even at one point covered every single piece of chrome on my VW with gloss black or Carbon fiber material. I think I went a little overboard, but I was younger then and it was after all just a VW. A couple more... god I miss this car.

Anyway, sorry about that I get carried away when I talk about some of my old cars. I haven't had my SLK long enough to really dive into projects on it like I tend to do, so remember fondly the last car and the projects I did. I have tons of ideas for my SLK, but believe it or not am already looking down the road to where I can afford a face-lifted SLK55... but I guess I should have fun with what I have, right?

Again, sorry about high jacking my own thread with a love feast of an old car, but I digress. So what were you saying about a brilliant idea?

Not necessarily brilliant .... in fact it may be remarkably stupid.

I've just ordered a length of matte finish Anthracite vinyl and I'm going to have a go at recovering the console itself. Both my SLK's have the dreaded patchy paint on them, worn near my hips and around the key slot. Will sure beat trying to paint plastic. That must rank as one of the worst ideas Merc ever had!

The biggest challenge is going to be getting the vinyl to conform to the Handbrake recess.

If it goes well I'm sure it'll be a popular mod!

Are you talking about covering the lower dash and other portions of interior in new vinyl? I am assuming not vinyl wrap but leatherette material? I have been contemplating doing the same thing and have my eye on some Leather online that is a close match to my dashes, bluish gray, or anthracite as it is called (which is not the same charcoal color as other German cars).

I am awaiting on a sample of said leather, if you are doing what I think you are, I will be interested in seeing the vinyl you are using (where you sourced it) and how well it matches the doors, etc. I have access to an upholstery grade sewing machine and have thought about sewing in a contrasting thread down the side of the console.

Man, talk about high jacking a thread (sarcasm)... thanks a lot....

There must be a market for a kit of ready made, stitched up covers to refurb old SLK's consoles!

I got several samples (will take pictures this p.m.) yesterday and put a few strips down to see how they would look. I found one I like, but the problem as I see it will be the steering wheel.

I could easily recover the entire dash, in a different wood, carbon fiber, etc. But covering the wood bits on the steering wheel I am just not sure about... same goes for the gear shift lever. Not sure what I will do... the Mahogany Wood vinyl looks really nice and I could live with it finished or unfinished. Sort of looks like the wood in the newer Infiniti's and Audi's that is unfinished (no-clearcoat).

Well, I found an all leather steering wheel at a salvage yard, I just need to dye the tan leather black and will probably get a new gear shift knob and then I can wrap the delaminated wood in any color I want. Am leaning towards another wood, but can't decide on Mahogany or maybe something darker. I know carbon fiber is all the rage, but for some reason in this car it doesn't look right to me... wish I could sort replacement trim pieces cheaper than they are and wouldn't have to cheapen things with vinyl wrap.... oh well, the price we pay to not have to pay for the real deal...
