Can't turn engine off

Have a problem on my 2002 slk230.I cant turn the engine off, I can take the key out and the engine is still going....have to pull the fuel pump fuse to stop it.The key is a bit lose in the barrel but everything else turns off except the engine, sigh.Do you think just a new barrel will cure it or do I need a new ignation unit? Any thoughts would be appreciated

It's been a topic previously.

Try this:
Mercedes Benz SLK Forum - Search Results for SLKWorld.com Can't turn engine off

I don't think page 1 has any solutions but there are many pages.

Update, also my inability to spell engine, having left the battery disconnected for a few days, I reconnected it and all seems peachy, normal lights, engine starts and stops.Am I looking at a possible ignition switch problem or engine management problem?Do I start at the cheapest option and work my way up?The AA man seemed to think its something to do with the switch on the rear of the ignition unit.
Dont you just love intermittent faults.......

Depending on cost difference start with the most likely issue.

I generally start with quick/free fixes and work my way up.

Check out the number of threads where issues like this crop up.

Although not a guaranteed fix, the battery is often a good place to start.
As Jeff said.

Did you charge your battery whilst it was disconnected?

As we've said, the slk wants and needs a great battery
not a good battery
not a good battery that one keeps recharging hoping it will resurrect itself
battery could have a bad cell or cells and still keeps starting the car after 'resting'

I can confirm/re-affirm the need for a GREAT battery. Bought an '02 SLK320 with 31,000 miles and drove it for a year. Last January it didn't want to start on first key turn. Turn key 2nd time and started and ran with no problems. Parked it, went into store, came out, same thing. Then transmission went into 'limp mode' (2nd gear). Did this over several days and I finally replaced the battery. Hasn't gone into 'limp mode' for past 8 weeks. Battery I replaced was an MB and date code seem to indicate Sept 2005!

and again

Hi all thanks for all the ideas,I have a new battery so will replace it.The latest trick is the remote wont lock the car, I have replaced the battery's, re synced the key, it locks OK with the button on the dash, but thats it.Is there a way to find out if the key is transmitting a signal(the red light flashes) or the receiver is working?

Before you start chasing down the new problem change the main battery.

If your lucky, the new problem may be related.

A quick and free secondary check.
Take a look at the foam around the pse in the boot.
Check for damp, especially on the bottom.
Moisture in the pse causes all kinds of problems.
