Indicator problems still!

My 99 R170 230k has intermittent indicators. I have looked for anything obvious but some days they just don't work. The hazards work fine and the indicators blink with the alarm. The bulb warning light is on, on the dash. Any ideas.

Is the stalk switch ok? Perhaps some contact cleaner sprayed into the switch?

Maybe you need the stalk replaced. My high beam flash didn't work on 32 and on my 320 the high beam function didn't work at all. Both needed the stalk replaced.

Pretty much but first things first is to remove the battery positive cable and do not reconnect it until all other wiring is reconnected otherwise you may end up with an airbag error that needs a trip to a stealer or at least a Merc independent.

If you want to test before all the panelling is back together then make sure any wiring / harnesses are connected before connecting the battery.

Ok, easy job done and fuel gauge now works and have 30000 miles less on the car BUT indicators are still not working even though diagnostic said instrument panel change would fix that too! Stalk time I think?

Indicator stalk should be an easy replacement. I did my cruise control stalk some time ago.

I have ordered a stalk. Funny thing is, all evening the indicators have worked. Differences being its raining and the engine has been hot most of today. It does seem to be better with a hot engine. Thanks.

Was all going well but how on earth do you remove the 10mm allen head bolt in the centre of the steering wheel? Its rock solid.

Get someone to hold the steering wheel and usually with a bit of brute force you'll get it !

I use a sawn off straight piece of allen key abourt 5cms long held in a socket from my socket set . Remember the longer the ratchet the easier it will be ..

...and use a quality allen key (more precise and the steel is harder)...that bolt will probably have been installed with some lock tite..

I have a set of top quality large allen keys that fit into an adaptor that fits a 1/2 inch socket drive. I couldn't get it loose with that. I took the adaptor and the correct allen drive down to the local tyre place and they popped it on to the impact driver they use for wheels and cracked it loose for me. I tightened it up using the normal socket wrench and drove home to complete the job.

Then I bought a pneumatic impact driver for my garage, surprisingly reasonably priced and a very usefull tool to have at hand.

I did assemble with a drop of loctite when I was done
