2003 SLK230 - Won't start

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum, so please excuse any faux pas. We have a 2003 SLK230 with a little over 20k miles. Yesterday, I attempted to put a new CD in the changer and received the 'No Changer' message. Took the magazine out, turned ignition to 'on' then 'off', and reinserted the magazine. All is well with the CD.

This morning, my wife was leaving and the SLK will not start. Not turning over, no click. All dash board indicators activate and the batter is reading 12.85 volts. A search of the internet revealed it could be a K40 issue. I removed the unit from the vehicle and separated it from its case. No indication of bad solder joint, overheating, or anything amiss visually. Verified continuity in all fuses on the unit. It is possible it can still be the root of the problem? I also wonder if the CD issue was somehow related to the starting issue, as it seems to be an electronic/electrical problem

I will be extremely grateful for any suggestions anyone might have.

Thank you.

How old is the battery?
The slk needs a great battery, not a good recharged one

after checking the battery
reflow the solder joints. you cannot see itty bitty cracks

Check your battery.

SLKs need a great battery. Good is not good enough.
How old is it?

Do you do lots of small journeys?
Use the car daily?
Any longer (15-20 mile) trips?
SLKs don't like to sit. 3 weeks tops for a fully charged battery.

2003 SLK230 - Won't start

I do think you guys over egg this SLK's need a great battery mullarkey
Mine ran for a year on one well past its sell by date!!
Like all cars when it's flat the car won't start, but half an hour on the charger and everything works fine till the next three week spell when it's cold and the cars not started up

When my K40 was on its way out garbo7441 the first symptoms were that the starter motor just wasn't activating, try it an hour later and it was fine.
It then manifested itself in the starter motor not activating and the radiator fan spinning faster then the turbine on a 747 taking off.
I pulled the K40 and stripped it, all looked good.
I took the precaution of replacing it and I've had no problems since

It WAS the battery

As suggested, I checked the age of the battery. It was a 72 month battery installed 11/10, thus it was over 6 years old. Took it to, O'Reilly and their tester stated it had 12.1 volts and 700 CCA. However, the tester advised to 'charge and retest'. Based on the age of the battery and statements here about SLK's requiring a very strong battery, I just went ahead and bought a new one.

Installed the new battery and we are back in bidness... Thanks for the help, everyone. Great!!!

The thing with checking the battery?

It's easy and quick.
It's been the cause so often that it is a recommended starting point. Including checking terminals etc.

Then fuses.

Then K4/Starter et al.

The more electrical issues I read, the more often this is the fix.

It is not the only fix though.
