slk 230 2002 roof not working

Hi guys,
Ive just had the alternator fixed, now when i go to put the roof down i get no noise no nothing but the roof switch flashes, but when i push the roof switch forward i hear a noise as if the roof is trying to close even though its already closed, ive checked the relay and thats fine, any ideas please . Does the engine have to be running to put the roof down, although i have tried this and it still dont work.
many thanks matt.

You have to have the key forward at least, but best to have the car on if your battery is weak. Mine also does a bit of motion even when already closed. I guess it loses a bit of hydraulic pressure when sitting and so it builds it back up when you try to close again. As far as it not opening, check your shade roller. It is closed? if not, check that pin 54 on the roof module has ground. If not, the roller switch may be broken or it's not getting ground at the source (bolt in truck somewhere). If it is, then you'll have to go from there checking the the other pins as well. Efair just posted the pin numbers here on post #7 . https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-gen...em-solved.html

sounds to me like his boot cover is simply not put out, thats what happens in my r170 when the light flashes, just the boot cover (pull out l;uiggage cover) is not in place?

My best guess:

If I was changing out your alternator, I would have disconnected the battery for my safety.

I bet your problem is related to the switches being powered down.

I'm not sure about the top switches but I know the seat switches need to be reset sometimes.
Does anyone know if there's a procedure to reset the top switches?

I found this on another post, my roof still has problems though so I couldn't say 100% whether it works or not:

Reset vario-roof :

• Switch off the engine
• Get out and shut the door and Lock
• Wait Min. 30sec
• unlock the car, get in and close door
• put the Key in the ignitionlock ( not switch )
• The roof switch with the left hand in the closing position
press and hold.
• Switch on the ignition with the right hand and the engine start .
• Close the roof .
• When no result :
• Disconnect the battery terminals . ( First minus then plus)
• Min. 30 minutes wait.
• Connect the battery terminals . ( first plus then minus)
• Repeat the previous steps .

Do you have an automotive test lamp, and are you comfortable reading a pinout diagram?

right i found the n10-3 and know how to get it out but can it be opened up? and does anyone know if this would suffer from the dreaded dry or cracked solder joints? if anyone intrested i have a pdf on how to remove this module.

right i have taken out the n10-3 took it apart although theres loads of solders that dont look consistant with the others its all good and i have taken the k40 apart resoldered 2 contacts as they look dodgy put back together and no change what so ever so what does that tell you? is it a switch?

double tap puts windows down
that is supposed to happen

just hold the button to the rear (if top is up) until something happens and do not let go

Look at post 13 and 15 in this thread. The pinout shows the physical location of the various pins.

Measure the ohms resistance between each of the pins mentioned in post #13 and tell us what you measure for each. Also tell us the physical state of the roof while you made the measurements.
