Is this on an automatic or standard transmission?

Various opinions out there but dead simple.
The black collar at the bottom of the knob itself rotates 90 degrees counter clockwise. It may be stiff - I had to wrap a rag on my water pump pliers to bump it free as it was on there for 12 yr. - but it will turn. The knob will pull off quite easily.
To replace it is easier to make sure the collar is mounted on the knob correctly. Just push it down on the shaft, put a bit of upward pressure on the collar and turn it 90 degrees clockwise.
I just replace a delaminated and cracked shifter gate panel and went through the same dilemma only to find it so easy it was embarrassing. Good Luck.

I was worried for a moment- I thought somebody was going to take that classic 3 pointed star off in favor of an eight ball or a skull shifter knob.

I love looking down at the top of that shifter- just classy.

Question gate panel removal

I'm having a similar issue with mine. (I think some super glue and some clamps might arrest the degradation . . . the panels are seemingly getting very hard to get a hold of.) Am I correct in understanding that there are 4 clips under the panel holding it in place? I can see 4 anyway, they look like they might be a bit tough to spring them all free at the same time. (And I'm a little leery of snapping them off!)

Any particular trick to getting it free?

Thanks

Have you removed the outer surround (#2 in the following pics)
after you have gently pried up the chrome surround,
then pry the outer surround,
that will expose the clips that hold the inner surround in place.
gently pry them open 1 at a time.

Actually I've had the whole console/dash apart - side to side and front to back. (Some of it's still in pieces actually! :-\ So getting to them isn't an issue, but since it's really tight, I wasn't sure what I was looking at. I probably should have tried to get it unhooked when I had the front console out . . .

I'll give it another look tonight. Hopefully there aren't any other loose pieces involved, and the shifter will still operate normally . . . ? (Mine is an auto . . . )

Thanks

The "trick" in removing the section around the shifter is to press the inner tabs in! (Not to try to pull the outer tabs (shown) out.)
