Down on power

My slk 230k seems to be down on power. I've done the gearbox reset but I'm sure it used to be more rapid and fun than it is, in fact on a local steep hill it almost struggled.

Now I did have some issues last September with the k40 relay and the car was misdiagnosed with a gearbox problem which resulted in the air mass sensor being replaced (probably unnecessarily) before I got round to fixing the relay myself.

I suspect the the kompressor is not working as it feels like there is no boost. Besides this there are no other issues and the car is tip top. Is there anything I should look/test for or tell the garage to look at first?

It's pretty easy to tell if the super charger is working. I think the early ones have a clutch and it's set up to come on around 2,000 rpms. If it's not, it could be the connection at the back of the supercharger or it could be the k40 relay. How did you fix the relay? Did you resolder all the joints? Below is a video of a clk 230 which will show you how to visually see if the s/c is working.

Does sound like you do have an issue.

Our 230 used to romp up steep hills. We were quite surprised how well it would go.

Thanks for the YouTube clip, very helpful. I've just had a look and as in the vid the clutch isn't engaging after the revs reach 2500 so this is my problem.

I changed the k40 in September and I am pretty confident that it has been this way ever since. I wasn't able to repair the old relay and got a second hand one from eBay. I've seen another thread on here re the kompressor where someone suggested the two could be linked, any ideas to what steps I could take next?

The car is perfectly driveable, just not as much fun!

Had a technical friend (Audi tech) fit a new DAB stereo today (new pollen filter as well, old one was as black as the ace of spades) and he said he'd have a look at the supercharger as it could be something as simple as it not being connected properly.

Walked there after work in the glorious (for February) sunshine to see the dash all in bits and not quite finished and hadn't had the chance to look under the bonnet yet. So walked another three mile home.

Hour later he's outside with everything fixed and working including the supercharger. When I had the original k40 issues in September and the garage replaced the air flow meter they left something unconnected. Took him five mins to locate, diagnose and fix. Ł35 mates rates all in Inc filter. Very happy. Car very fast.

Good for you. Glad it worked out. We've had unseasonably warm weather (60f in Minnesota) and I've been driving mine everyday. Enjoy.

Minnesota that's a proper winter! It's only snowed here twice in 17 years, pushing 15c (59f in old money) yesterday which woukd be good for April. Not had the roof down though, will only do it May to September.

Only May to September? You're missing half the year James!

There's enough heat from the SLK to put the top down in quite unseasonably cool weather and not feel the cold. We've been out with the roof down in the sunshine when it's 2.5°C and I'm sure others will have been out in similar. And there's nothing to beat smelling wood fires as you drive through the villages in Sussex. Really puts a smile on your face.

The only thing to be slightly careful about is to make sure that the car has had a chance to warm up before dropping the top so as to give the pump and hydraulics an easier job of putting the top away.

Then enjoy!
