R170 Alarm has mind of its own!!

Happy Xmas everyone.

Weird problem. My R170 (SLK 200) alarm has started randomly going off whenever it wants.

This started happening after I had some bodywork done - all 4 wheel arches were sprayed and the bonnet lip and the front two wings above the bumper. Can't see how any of these fixes would cause the alarm to go off though.

There was a warning light on the dash but it was for low windscreen washer fluid so nothing to do with the alarm.

Does anyone more experienced with R170s have any idea why this could be happening?

Also, is it possible to disengage the alarm system completely so I don't have to bother with this for a while? Couldn't see anything in the owner's manual regarding this.

Thanks.

your alarm has a battery of its own
this happens when that battery is going or is dead

from a search of our site (you did search right? )

Mine did that the summer before last. Drove me nuts. That winter, the main battery failed. I replaced it and haven't had any alarm issues since.

Now that I think about it, it could be the PSE vacuum pump that is playing up in my car because the alarm has only been going off on days when it rained. So that is the first thing I'm going to check with my mechanic before steaming ahead and buying a new siren.

But here's a question for more knowledgeable people -

If we find water has been getting in and has affected the PSE, and then we fix it, what steps do we take to stop water getting in in the future? In some of the posts I've been reading, people have alluded to drainage channels - can anyone tell me or point me to a post which explains what steps I have to take to make sure my drainage channels are clear and efficient?

Thanks

not the expert, but others have 'elevated' the pse from its current location

Thanks Jeff.

Elevated? Can you elaborate?

Also, does the PSE also control the folding roof?

Thanks

not the expert. pse should have nothing at all to do with the roof
does assist with the putting down of the windows me thinks
elevated? they raised it up on something

let me see if i can find any examples
