here is one diy

https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-cla...0-00-36-a.html

For Trunk Strut Installation:

There is no need to loosen any bolts. You need to remove the rubber stopper and the triangular mount on the hinge. This way you can fully open the trunk lid.

The rubber stopper can be easily removed by hand and the triangular mount can be removed with a small screwdriver (don't worry, it won't break easily). After you removed these 2 pieces on both hinges, you can fully open the trunk lid. In this position, it will stay open even after you removed the old air struts. Fitting in the new air struts now will be effortless. You will not be able to compress the new struts by hand.

dealer has new parts and it is not one that will break the bank. You should replace both at the same time.

Can't be that bad, the parts are $15-20 U$D each at most from a non Dealer MB source, and even the dealer MSRP isn't that much higher on these. I think I got mine for about $17 ea. and that got me free shipping as well. (Though not shipped to AUS for sure.)

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/[email protected]/Strut, Trunk

Five to ten minutes and a small flat bladed screw driver is all you need to do the job.

If it's that much more there to do this, it might be time to move! ;-) jk

***** Sorry, Strut post as well - See my next post for the cylinders. I'll leave this up just for the link and info for others. *****

Cylinder as in the ones that open the trunk for the roof to fold back into? Or the ones behind the driver and passenger's shoulder to fold the roof down?

We can get those rebuilt here for $50-60 ea. plus shipping . . . (or use to anyway . . . )

***** Check www.tophydraulicsinc.com for roof cylinder rebuild info. *****

there are 2 types of cylinders in this conversation. 2 are struts that are shaped like cylinders. those are the $15 ones and lift the trunk so it does not fall on your head. the others are part of the roof assembly and are the ones that can be repaired price about $60. now we are clear.

I know what a cylinder looks like and what it is usually made of and how it works...usually made from aluminium or steel and have fluid...
Whereas a strut is usually made of a hard plastic (sometimes ceylon) and has a steel shaft and are usually gas filled.

Im talking about the cylinder that has hydraulic lines coming from the hydraulic pump which is filled with the special MB fluid..
Anyway I have removed it myself now and are ready to take it to a hydraulic guy to have the cylinder seal fixed.

Cheers

Kurt

Okay we are now getting to which part you are talking about. The most often asked about is the struts that hold the boot open to put stuff in or out of the boot. That is the reason everyone was thinking that was what you were writing about. You can buy repair kit on Ebay for the leaking seals on the ones you are talking about if you are a DIY person.

Being on this site for several years we often hear items called by the wrong names and try to figure out what a person is talking about. We try to help by deciding what it is and what is the possible item in question based on what we have seen in the past. I have seen the strut called a cylinder and as well as the thing that hold the boot open. Sorry I miss read what you were writing about.
