Stereo suggestions for a SLK 230

Was thinking about upgrading the stereo system on the 230. Does anyone have a suggestion? Is there a system that could utilize the 6 CD system? Thanks Keg

You won't be able to use your CD changer with the aftermarket radio. The reason is that Mercedes uses fiber optic cabling... and no one supports it. But hey, you can get a nice stereo for around $100-150 with USB support! Get 16gb USB and it will eliminate the need for CD changer =) Besides over the time when you drive over bumps the CDs use to slip and pause music playing, and... scratch CDs... Besides... who uses CDs nowadays?!
Here's a thread on how to swap your radio:
https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-cla...-pictures.html

But if you want plug and play without messing with the wiring harness check for Blaupunkt stereos!

I replaced mine with the Kenwood KDC-895 and removed the CD player in the trunk. I wanted Cirrius radio as well as the bluetooth. The installation is clean and looks great. I use an ipod for auxiliary music. Mounted the Cirrius antenna in the center of the dash (magnetic mount, no glue or fasteners) about 4" back from windshield. The KDC-895 is now KDC-896.

If you don't want Cirrius try the KDC-395

Good luck

Mine already had a crummy aftermarket in it when I bought it, and the previous owner did a hackjob self install and pretty much eliminated all of the speakers except the main door speakers....and for some reason he left the CD changer in the trunk. I replaced the previous owner's aftermarket with a Kenwood KDC-BT645...which I highly recommend. My two favorite features include a USB port for my iPod and a Bluetooth receiver for handsfree for my cell....and it sounds great. I ended up taking out the changer for a little more trunk space.

Not only that but I didn't have to use a ground-loop isolator with my old Blau, but my Sony (MEX-3900U - got a GREAT deal on it and it has BlueTooth, USB, etc.) needed one to eliminate popping.

I'd recommend the Blaupunkt Toronto 420:

You can see an early audio post of mine here. Changed a few things, need to get new pics.

I'd second the Sony!! (Whichever is the current version, or whatever else that might be comparable.) Only thing I did was to ditch the supplied harness outputs and ran typical speaker cables from the Sony's amped outputs to the cars amp harness. (I did have to cut into the wiring there; this is shown in an older thread.) I have the rear woofers in my car so I hooked the "rear" channels of the Sony to them and told the Sony to treat them as "subs." This also eliminates the popping!!!!

That has worked out really well. A lot more power available utilizing all 4 channels out from the Sony without getting too wild.

I have something similar to this http://www.icarkits.com/cars/MERCEDE...ss_2003/PMBDV6 (I don't have the fiber optic connection) & a 160 gig iPod.

I guess i got lucky when i bought my 99 230k it had a 10 disc Sony changer in the boot and a old sony radio/cassette in the dash. So i just put my sony Mex 3900u in the dash all connected up fine took about two mins to change. I now can have 10 normal discs in the changer use mp3 discs in the dash ipod in the usb port and still have the bluetooth for phone, now just need to upgrade the speakers for more volume as i only have standard door ones.

The factory speakers are really plenty once you add a nice sub. Luckily the 'trunk' is almost like a hatchback in that you can hear everything clearly through it.
I can easily hear the fan on my amp.

I bet a Bazooka tube would pound in there and be removable as needed.

A third vote for the Sony from me. They are great, and ridiculously cheap. I bet you could get more for your head unit and changer (sold separately) on EBAY.

Ive just replaced my door speakers with a pair of pioneer and the sound difference is amazing. I can now actually turn my sony stereo up and get some bass.

Very cool - did you replace the tweeters as well or leave them in place?

Do you recall what model the Pioneers are?

Ditto on the Sony. I got one fitted when I first got my slk230 as the stereo in it was fragged, what a lot of sound for your money.....more boom boom for your buck!

Very Late to this Thread - July 2016

I've had 92 SLK 230 R170 intermittent CD changer for a year now...and finally removed it May 2016. went looking for a 'suitable' replacement radio and decided I just didn't want the glitzy new multi-colored flashing illumination/what-have-you offerings from C/fld or others. (Yes, I know I can select white and tune it down, but I really liked the simple classic style of the original.) So, re-thinking what I really wanted, I went to my local repair station (not auth M-B, but a good trained mechanic) and found out I could sent the radio in to Becker in NJ and have a hard-wired USB AUX output installed for nominal fee and minor inconvenience. Will pick it up today and see if a new extension - here's the decisions today: out the glovebox, out the ashtray, hole-in-the-dash, other - to play iPod and iPhone content while driving is a good choice. More shortly on how it turned out and cost. the Becker site has info and pricing for more modern radio mods and upgrades, but for this 'old car' just had send-in offering. Cost and how it works to come. For review, see my reply to Fact150 below. :-)

That's a good call.

I changed my stereo from the Alpine-built Audio 10 to a Becker Indianapolis cos I liked the sound, it has built-in navigation (albeit with 8-year old maps) and is readable in direct sunlight!! Couple this with a bluetooth module that connects to the CD changer port and life's just grand.

Beckers now offers Bluetooth add on for an extra 25.00 . I'll be sending my unit in August . I'll route the Aux plug so it's in the center console and it'll be completely factory with a little new-ish technology

Thanks Fact150. I just got my standard MB raio back form Bcker in NJ and it cost $180 and $32.05 for the shipping. I decided not to get Bluetooth, and I thought I was getting a USB connection for my iPod/wife's iPhone. Instead all they could do was give an added audio in mini-jack from the rear of the radio. It goes to a 1 X 1 X 1/2 " or so plastic box with a female mini-jack on the side. I routed it under the plastic (above the side carpet) where the red on the side of center console goes to black plastic - right side of the console, beneath the left side of the glove box cover. Pix attached. What comes out is a 3' cord (Becker sent to me) with a mini-plug on each end. It is apparently wired to the cassette player. You must put a cassette in ther for it to work. then you hit TAPE on the lower right selector on the left side of the radio head and - poof - you get iPod music. Pretty painless but pretty expensive. Keeps the basic radio of course. CD Changer finally dies a month or two ago and I removed it. It's been intermittent for a year or two. Hope this helps some in a decision. Expensive, but I'd probably do it again.
