SLK320 R170 headlight removal – 2001- Additional information

Subject: the 3rd screw doesn’t secure the light, a plastic bolt does, you need to undo both see pics.

Previous posts refer to the simple step of removing 2 screws with the 3rd one found when the blinker lens is removed. However, scant reference is made to how the headlight is 'really secured', and how to undo it. – To get the light out, (the 3rd) large black plastic bolt needs to be partially undone - details in next para (M16 thread, accessed from the underside) and this is partly visible when the 3rd screw is removed.
As you will see the 3rd screw actually fits through the centre of this plastic bolt.
The real function of the 3rd screw is to fasten up the lower front bumper / spoiler, and it seems the designers decided there was no-where else to put the screw, but thru a headlight bolt mount.

Loosening the M16 bolt
To gain access to the underside of the large plastic bolt, you need to undo a few fasteners seen in the wheel arch. The spoiler will then drop down from the guard enough so you can just see the plastic bolt underside. The plastic bolt head hexagon is 24mm across the flats, so slip a large 24mm wide open end spanner onto the nut flats (no imperial size equivalent) and turn clockwise to undo a turn or two just to loosen it a bit only.

The plastic bolt attaches is slipped into a steel tab, the tab being part of the side fender / guard. The tab has a wide slot in it, (and plastic bolt slips into the large dia groove slot in the tab) and when the plastic bolt is undone a turn or two, the headlight can be slid sideways a little to clear the slot and presto you can finally lift it up and the headlight is finally out.

Not sure I'm totally clear on that . . . but it was a question I had been scatching my head on. Perhaps when I finally get to working on a headlight in my car!!! . . . it might make more sense to me. (Unless you have some pictures???

i've only removed the driver side, but for me, the corner light had to be removed first, then the main light was held by a plastic tab that had to be moved to the side... i didn't have to go to the fender well at all... so i'm not sure what you are referring to... can you post pics ?

my passenger side headlight has moisture in it sometimes , so I need to take it off to look at it.. i'll see how it comes apart and let you know if I figure it out..

i'm also trying to figure out how to adjust the self leveling lights...

2001 SLK 230 headlight lens only

I need replacement headlight lens only for my 2001 SLK 230. IO don't want the entire housing as my lens are cloudy and these aftermarket cleaners do not get them clear. Any suggestions for am aftermarket source would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2015, model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.
