Slk Misfire help appreciated

Hi

I have recently purchased a 1999 SLK 230k with 59k miles on the clock.

The car initially appeard to run fine, it then developed a misfire on cylnder 4. When the car was switched off and re-started it went away, then when the engine was put under load the fault returned. There was a significant lack of acceleration and the engine sunded like it was going to stall when at idle.

I have changed the coil packs and the spark plugs. The car can run fine for 100 miles and then the fault can re-occure. It seems to be once the car has warned up and then been allowed to stand for a few momens. It will then sometimes start to judder (missfire). I have also changed the oil (and filter), air filter, fuel and polen filters (all parts came from Mercedes).

The frustration I have is that its intermitant and despite hours of reading various forums its quite difficult for me to diagnose the underlying problem. My next port of call was going to be to clean the MAF and possibly replace the injector in clyinder 4.

I believe because of the low milage that car has probably spent most of its life stiing around in various garages.

Has anyone had any similar problems? I am not a mechanic but am willing to get my hands dirty and have a go.

Any help would be really appreciated, The SLK is a great little car!!

I will update my profile shortly, I am located in Kent UK.

Welcome to the World’s Premier Mercedes-Benz SLK Community from Valrico, Florida!

If you haven't, please update your location/vehicle (model and year) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information.
‘Usercp’ at the top left of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. And it only takes about 30 seconds to do!

You might want to post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:

If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.

In addition, if you haven’t, please post your question in the appropriate discussion forum for a quicker response and only once. Be patient and a knowledgeable member or guest will address your question.

Welcome. I had a problem under a load and always ended up in limp mode. It turned out to be a cps ( crank position sensor) it's a cheap and simple job.

Hi, Thank you for this, I will change the CPS and see how I get on.

I should have mentioned that the initial delaer scan revealed the below codes as 'Not defined'

P0130-015 - G3 (Right O2 sensor, before TWC [KAT})
P0720 - Read out fault memory control unit ETC.
P0204 - Y62y4 (Cylinder 4 injector)
P0300-080 - Misfiring Damages TWC
P0304-083 Misfire of cylinder 4:83.

On the basis the coil pack and plugs have been replaced in cyliner 4, its got me thinking it could be the injector in cyllinder 4 which is weak / dirty. Any thoughts on changing that, it looks to be well inside the engine?

Appreciate any help

Best

Daniel

If the 02 sensor is bad, it will cause misfired. Since the one of the code is an 02 sensor then it make sense the misfired. So your next step would be replace the 02 sensor before the CAT. Make sure ONLY buy the OEM sensor.
