Rear axle compatibility: r170 to w202

Hello everybody,

My car is a slk 200 kompressor from 2002, m111 engine, 163hp. If VIN is needed please let me know.

And now on the problems:
last night, bad weather, I lost control of the car in a curve and hit the sidewalk on the left side of my car. Result: rear axle arms bent and some of them torn apart. Wheel is not aligned anymore. Softer problems for the front suspension, have not yet finished investigating.

I want to ask your help in this matter by telling me if you know if the rear axle (rear multi-link suspension) is the same with the one from W202 as I have found at a dismantling shop (breakers) one from W202 in very good shape (if I buy it from the dealer, they will rip me off).

Help much, much appreciated.

As you know, the R170 was derived from the W202 floor pan & running gear. I've had a quick look on EPC and the axle & rear suspension are very similar, and share a lot of part numbers, but as you can imagine, unless you go through and check each of the (major) parts, you could never be sure which parts might be different.

Perhaps the easiest way would be to check which parts on yours are actually damaged, and we can take it from there.

Thank you for your answer!

The part that got damaged is the ear in which the arm is connected to the rear axle.

Here's below a picture illustrating the rear axle taken from here: https://www.slkworld.com/r170/_derive...t_RearSusp.gif where I have pointed in red the ear the arm torn. Both are on the left side but in the picture we can see left & right.

As you can see the ear and the arm are both torn apart, both on the same side.

OK, the part with the 'ears' is the Rear Subframe - you'll be pleased to know that this has the same part number for both the R170 and the W202. You might find the gearing in the diff and the springs/dampers are different between the two, but these are fairly easy to swap out between the two.

I would be tempted to go for it. Good luck

You have made my day! Any idea what's the part number?

That's all I need actually, never mind that the other parts don't fit. I will buy new ones.

The part number for the rear subframe is A 202 350 92 08 - item 5 in the DWG below.

Hello guys, again with a problem:

I have bought this axle shaft from ebay. See attachment.
My mechanic said it does not fit to my car which is a SLK 200 Kompressor 2002/163bhp. The shop I bought it from, said it fits 100%, it is from a SLK 230 kompressor which is compatible with mine.

Can you please help?

Thank you very much.

Hi Morpheus, according to EPC, the earlier 230s have different part numbers:-

A 202 350 88 10 SLK230 - early model.

A 171 350 12 10 SLK200 and later SLK230

I wonder if you got one from an earlier car?

Well, I don't know that. I have the following compatibility list for the axle shaft:
A 202 350 84 10 AXLE SHAFT - BOLTED PROPELLER SHAFT
A 170 350 03 10 AXLE SHAFT - PLUGGED-IN PROPELLER SHAFT
A 170 350 03 10 AXLE SHAFT - PLUGGED-IN PROPELLER SHAFT Replaced_By: A 170 350 12 10 - which seems to be the one you are talking about.
Now, I will have to ask the shop in Germany where I bought it from, which one of them it is.
However, they asked for specific information and they recommended this part as a replacement so that's how I bought it.
The thing is that I have made further research and it seems that I need more than this axle shaft. There is a part called repair kit (A 210 350 06 37 REPAIR KIT AXLE SHAFT,INSIDE BOOT) that I also need. I have ordered that too and tomorrow I'll find out how/if it fits. Right now I'm stuck. I think tomorrow I'll find out more.

I have further searched, and my mechanic says that one like this is what I actually need. Can't I adapt the one I have to fit my car? Any ideas?

Any hints?
