Intermitant starting issue

Shoot. We've put a fair few fun miles on our SLK 230. Everything has been super, until this week.

Got a call from my wife. She was working late, went out to Subway for a sandwich and when she got back in the car, it wouldn't start. She works waaay out east of town, so I drove out to see if I could see anything. There was nothing to see! We jumped in the car, turned the key and it started normally. Hum.

I've been driving the car for a few days with no issue. Tonight, after work, after sitting out in the garage all day, went to start it and same thing. Turned the key- nothing. Headlights work. Battery is good. But when I turn the key, absolutely nothing. I messed around for a while, turning the key over, messing with the shifter. No change.

Now, it may or may not be related, but in my random "mess with stuff" procedure, I flipped the towing alarm override switch. Turned the key and it started normally as if nothing had happened. We didn't do that when it happened the first time, so it may have nothing to do with it. I'm not sure.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm kinda hoping it's a common or at least known problem because it's so intermittent I can't imagine how a mechanic would track it down.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ed

Well, there's no doubt that the battery is worth a look. I believe it's original to the car! But unless there's something different about this car than others I've owned (quite possible!) I don't *think* it's the battery. It's like a switch- absolutely nothing one second, then completely normal the next. But you're absolutely right, it's worth having it tested if only to remove that variable.

I did just have a thought while my wife and I were comparing our notes. When it happened to her, she left it, and locked it normally with the remote. When we came back, of course, we unlocked it. I don't know much about that towing switch, but as I understand it, it's an alarm override. I'm wondering if the only consistent thing between our experiences is that we cycled the alarm and, I assume, a starer interrupt relay somewhere.

mbs are finicky about their batteries. here in florida, i have had to replace my battery, in 3 slks, since 2002, every 2 years like clockwork. so first step is to test the battery. others will chime in on what the cranking voltage should be and if yours is low, that is the first thing to correct

Now that's funny! I hope I didn't sound quite as dismissive as that. Well, then. Battery moves to the A1 position on the list! Sure hope it's that simple.

I can't say for sure that the battery is original to the car, but if it has been replaced, it was replaced with a Mercedes battery. Probably has a date code on it somewhere that I could check. But I was surprised when we got the car that it seemed to have the factory battery. So that's even more reason to start there.

Thank you! I'll report back after I have it tested, but that sure sounds like a strong possibility.

I just ran out and had a look at the battery and the negative cable is corroded. Yup, I'll spend a bit of time with that tomorrow. Looking more and more like it could be the problem. I didn't see any kind of a date code, so I still can't say how old it really is.

Had the battery tested and it showed a dead cell. So that seems to have been the problem! Maybe should have looked around for something better than the red top Duralast, but it should be better than the battery that came out of it. At least for a little while!

Thanks again! Glad it was simple.
