Windshield Glass

I have about a 12" crack in my windshield that I've been putting off getting repaired. I've decided for safety reasons, it's time to get my windshield replaced.

Any opinions on replacement glass....specifically OEM vs. aftermarket? With the estimates I've received so far, the OEM glass is about 3-4 times more expensive. Is there really that much of a difference?

I replaced mine about a year ago and went with OEM - but it was insurance covered and the cost difference wasn't that high. I've read a thread on here that mentioned one specific aftermarket brand that had problems with fit, but I can't remember which one. I think it had to do with the placement of the light/rain sensor. You should be able to find it on the forum.

IMHO one of the disadvantages of having a car that's low to the ground is that it is more vulnerable to road debris. I lost my Daimler signature patch with the replacement, but my new one is a M-B product.

Another learning. In Chattanooga the people who install windshields are not a high tech industry. I went by the place that the Insurance company recommended, and it was a little tiny "hole in the wall" shop. Wanting to have the highest quality work I called my local dealer and asked them who they used for glass work and changed the work order to use them. When I drove over to that shop to have the work performed, you guessed it - a little "hole in the wall" shop. Go Figure.

Best Wishes

Question: What states have free windshield replacement?

Answer: Only Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina waive the car insurance deductible for windshield repair or replacement and thus are referred to as having free windshield replacement or as zero deductible states.

This isn’t totally free windshield replacement, though, since you do have to pay to carry comprehensive coverage as part of a personal auto insurance policy written in one of these states in order to make a claim for your windshield.

State laws differ on what glass claims come without a deductible. Florida only waives the deductible for windshields, but Kentucky and South Carolina cover all glass replacement without a deductible.

I replaced mine 8months ago because the previous owner looked like he took a razor blade and scratched the hell out of it in a 3inch by 3 inch area on the top right hand corner. Since i was in the middle of restoring the car, i just bought a new one from the dealership and had safelite install it so the car would look nice. I was actually really glad that i took it out because: 1. There was about a 1/4 inch of glue on one side from FACTORY when there is suppose to be a good 1/2 an inch to 3/4 of an inch for safety and 2. There was 2 spots of rust starting that i fixed. The glass that came from the dealership was made by Pilkington with a Mercedes badge on it. I was kinda disappointed because the old glass was made by Saint-Gobain. Oh well.

Well, I had the windshield replaced by ABRA here in the Twin Cities (non-OEM....PGW glass). Since my insurance deductible is $500, I paid for it myself. Total cost was $228.42. So far it seems fine....no wind noise or leaking. Thanks for all of the input.

Did you watch them put it in? Because the wiper bay is really tricky. (If yours has the heated washer fluid) Also did you buy a clear or tinted (green looking) Windshield?

I have to admit, I did not watch them put it in....and I'm not sure if I have the heated washer fluid feature or not. I believe it's a clear glass, which I think is what was in there before. It has the "trim" around the edges and where the rear view mirror sits, and other than missing a little Mercedes sign in the bottom left corner and the Mercedes sticker on the bottom right corner, the glass seems to be exactly the same as what was in there before.

Yeah...there really isn't much difference...some aftermarket glass can be a mile off though. We had a rolled over Ford Raptor in our shop, replaced the roof on it, safelite came in with an aftermarket glass, a good inch short. Sent it back, the next day came in with an OEM ford one, fit like a glove!

Replaced a windshield and it was aftermarket but made by the same factory that made the OEM, just does not have the cars name on it. The little sticker for the bottom of the window can be bought form MB parts.
