Question Do I have an IR or RF remote?

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm having a hard time finding out whether I have an infrared IR or a radio RF remote for my 1998 Mercedes SLK 230.

I'm looking to buy a SmartTOP module so I can raise the roof remotely. The SmartTOP specs says:
"[...] on the earliest models (before 2000) which use a One-Button IR remote there are some limitations: Remote control of the convertible top is NOT possible with the IR remote. For remote operation key sequence commands like 3x LOCK or 3x UNLOCK are required, which can not be given with a one-button remote."

Indications of IR:
* My car model is before 2000 (1998).
* Red plastic head on the key.

Indications of RF:
* My remote has two buttons, and key sequences
such as 3x lock shouldn't be a problem.
* Red plastic head could just be for the LED battery indicator.
* The remote works from a nice range of 30-40 feet.
* The remote works without a clear line of sight.

So... what do I have? Is my dream of a SmartTOP still alive?

smart top install

I can assure you that you remote is a 2 button RF remote identical to mine minus the panic button which means you won't be able to have the chirp function when locking/unlocking doors just light flashing conformation. I installed the smart top on my 02 slk32.

Your remote looks similar to mine, only without the red panic button. Installed mine with no problems, but I would check with the store you're going to purchase it from, just to be sure. Good luck!

Thank you, all. It looks like I'll be getting a SmartTOP soon. Too bad about the missing chirp, but at least I can stand 10 feet from my car and watch it transform.

And raybonj, I want a nice hat too. Driving with the top down gives me sunburns.

10 feet I like to open mine up walking across the parking lot. So far the furthest I've reached is about 150 feet.
